On Saturday night 5th December Letterkennys own world kickboxing champion Tommy ‘The Ghost’ Mc Cafferty made a highly successful first defence of his ISKA Middleweight World Title when he took on Dominik ‘The German Bull’ Haselbeck in Inglostat Germany. Tommy and his faithful band of supporters headed off to Germany on Friday in preparation for the bout. The bout took place in haselbecks own back yard in front of over 1000 German supporters. The arena itself was superbly set up with three Harley Davidson motorcycles, a Ferrari and a Porsche convertible all put on display by the events sponsors.

Tommy’s fight was the co main event of the evening and as the ghost and the bull entered the arena you could see why, as both athletes entered the ring in phenomenal condition for what would surely be a fantastic fight. As the two combatants took to the centre of the ring there was a noticeable size difference in favour of the German bull but this did not deter mc cafferty as he stared him down before they touched gloves and went back to their respective corners for the start of round one. Mc Cafferty looked very calm and relaxed as round one got under way he connected straight away with a sharp left kick to the head of haselbeck which seemed to shock the German with its speed. Mc Cafferty was moving in and out and continually making the german bull miss, with kicks and punches hitting thin air, Mc Cafferty was playing the matador with the bull.

As the battle continued Mc Cafferty started to step it up continually attacking with sharp punches and kicks, each time they exchanged mc cafferty seemed to come out on top with strong left hooks and hard kicks to both the head and body which started to visibly shake Haselbeck as the fight went on. Four times to haselbecks disgust he found himself on the canvas looking up at the ever more confident mc cafferty. As the fight reached round nine mc cafferty pushed into top gear increasing his work rate and dominating the German through the final rounds as Haselbeck struggled to keep the furious pace of the letterkenny fighter. Tommy had haselbeck on the back foot and continually clinching to try and stall the onslaught of the Ghost.

As the bell went for the 12th and final round the bull came charging for mc cafferty looking for the knockout as this was seemingly his only chance of victory as mc cafferty had seemed to outclass him throughout the fight but mc cafferty stayed calm moving and forcing the German to miss and then countering with strong combinations, by the end of the round the bull was on the run from the ghost once again as mc cafferty finished out the fight on the attack. As the bout came to an end and both fighters raised their hands one could only wonder which way the German judges could score the fight. Both combatants were brought to the centre ring by the Russian referee and as the scores were being announced in german the crowd began to clap making mc cafferty and his corner men nervous, had they been stripped of their coveted crown, this nervous moment didn’t last long as the referee raised mc cafferty’s hand in victory. The 20 irish supporters along with mc cafferty and his mentor and coach Paddy toland erupted into celebrations, As mc cafferty climbed the corner post and raised his hands in victory to his supporters the chorus of ole ole could nearly be heard in Ireland it was so loud.

When speaking after the bout a delighted mc cafferty said ‘we are very happy with this victory, to come to germany and get a unanimous decision is a great achievement, myself and Paddy worked very hard in the gym for the last three months and the things we worked on were evident tonight, to have Paddy in my corner is a huge confidence booster, to have that knowledge and experience there is priceless. I’d like to thank my corner team Paddy Toland,Gerard conaughty and jag johal, my sports therapist and nutrionist Packie Sweeney and all my faithful supporters who made the trip to German.

It has brought to an end another successful year for Tommy and Paddy Toland who no doubt will be back again next year for another shot at success.
