4% they say, and reducing the u23s dole to 160 a week, thats all I have heard, its not going to be easy

Is it just under 23's that are been cut by 20% or is people 23 and under?

do you think everyone will be hit or just new claimants?

Younger dole claimants will definitely be hit. The idea is to encourage them to train or emigrate.

Didn't they bring in some of the changes immediately after the first of last year's budgets? :)

If there's a carbon tax, I'd be surprised if it didn't take effect straight away.

When they brought in the changes for under 20s in the last budget people already in receipt of the payment were not affected, so it might not affect people who are already in payment. We just have to wait and see.

I know it doesn't seem like much, but that €8 a week will be missed. Every € counts when you're only getting €820 a month.

I'm currently spending my money on putting food on the table, extravagant stuff like that. The missus and I rarely go out now, last Tuesday was an exception as our anniversary and the money went to a restaurant, straight back in wages to the local economy. As all my dole money does, no saving here anymore.

By five o'clock tomorrow we'll all be checking to see if we've still got kecks. :)

I still think that it's wrong to cut from the bottom of society. The government could have started with seriously cutting their own salaries first. Then we'd see that they mean business and maybe we could all get behind that. But that's not the way that it's going to happen.

As for this carbon tax; can someone point out an alternative to the current fuel options? If not, then this is purely a revenue raiser.

I'd manage with a 10 to 15% cut but I don't think it will be that high the 17 to 25 should get dole cut by 1/3 at least.

welcome to boards where everybody on the dole is branded a scumbag also in the world of boards the dole aparently consists of free housing free travel passes and free stuff in general. Welcome to boards where most people dont even know what tax bracket their in but feel well educated enough to advise others on why they should not claim benefits they are entitled to and judge you in the process. Few people on this forum who I personally hope are hit fairly hard today.

Can't see that helping long term. Part of the problem in this country is that money isn't flowing. 17-25 year olds don't hoard their cash, they blow it all every week. Next thing they'll emigrate and we'll have an older workforce to somehow dig us out of the mess we're in, which simply won't work.

I do think that there should be varying levels of social welfare though, one for the people who've contributed and another for the people who haven't. A taxi driver was telling me the other night that the dole used to pay 70% of your salary for several months. It was before my time, so I can't verify, but it would make sense of the Pay-Related bit in PRSI.

Oh, and good for you if you can get by with 10%-15% less. I'm not sure if I can by now as it happens. Every month is just that wee bit tighter than the month before and right now I'm only paying the interest on the mortgage.

Anyway, off to watch the news and see how the land lies. :)
