So I decided to go for my new computer due to a spill of coffee over my current laptop. Its still working, but not so stable.

Anyway, Im unsure of the current state of ATI radeon drivers in linux, Nvidia have always been my card of choice but these days I've seen some very very good things of ATI. ATI's linux drivers used to be kack, just wonderinging does anyone run a modern radeon in linux and can comment on the state of affairs?

    Cheers!

They work to an extent. There are two sets of drivers now - ATI's proprietary ones and open source ones. There are issues with both tho. I've an ATI card in my Myth box - with the ATI drivers video is ****e. With the Opensource ones Myth doesn't work. So I bought an nVidia card for it instead (which I still haven't put in).

    I'd stick with nVidia tbh.

+1. Linux support for ATI cards is getting better, but still not as functional as the nVidia drivers. If you have a choice in what you're getting then I'd go nVidia. I'm stuck with an ATI card through work and I've given up on getting the best out of it with Linux.

I have many ATI Radeon cards in the Dells where I work and it was surprisingly easier to install then previous attempts years ago, their Linux drivers have indeed improved over the years.

I'd still be sticking with Nvidia at home tho!

+1. I agree with everyone here, from past experiences I'm sticking with Nvidia.

ATI are getting there, but not quite yet.

This was pretty much what I expected! Nvidia is my card of choice anyway, but I must admit to there being quite a few nice radeons out these days, and they sure look better ascetically than most geforces.

After some consideration I've decided to grab a GTX 275, even tho its a above my budget and a bit of an overkill, the GTX 260 that I was planning on going for was only 25 euro less so its probably worth the upgrade.

That said, would be interesing to see if ATI releases a fully functioning linux driver, because they are cutting off an area of their market at the moment.

Depends on the card you use. If it's an up to date one such as a HD4870 then you'll be okay when it comes to the major Linux distros, using a not so known one will cause problems.
nVidia has always been the better option for Linux where the performance of their Linux driver is almost on par with the windows one.

ATi are not there yet, but they are getting there. I myself have a HD4870 under Ubuntu 9.10, Slackware 13 and openSUSE 11.2, performance is decent, but I have had my fair share of problems.

    +1 for sticking with nVidia.
