Computer not powering up with graphics card

    Hello all.

Last week my computer blue screened and after that I experienced this issue. My graphics card, nVidia 8800 GTX was getting really hot, plus a clicking noiuse was coming from the cards inbuilt fan. The fan was catching on a small screw inside the card, but would still work fine. The sound was just annoying.

Anyway, the computer began to randomly blue screen and freeze more and more. Did it 3 times in 30 minutes, then wouldnt turn back on.

It would power up for a split second, lights and fan would begin running but then switch off. After that, it would not power up at all.

After removing the graphics card, the computer would begin to run fine, lights fans and everything appeared to be running with the nVidia card completely removed.

So Im either thinking its the power supply or the graphics card. Im using a corisar 620W supply. Ive havent changed any hardware and the computer has been running fine for 22 months. This is my first problem with it.

Im getting a loan of a ATI card tonight to see if there is anything I can do, but I was just wondering if anyone had any idea what could be causing this.

    Thanks in advance.
    Dan

I would say the GFX card is overheating.

The fan SHOULD NOT be obstructed in any way whatsoever, and you really should have attended that problem.

Try to fix the issue by either:

    1. removing the fan and heatsink, and replacing it using new thermal paste, and ensuring its screwed in correctly.

    2. replacing the cooler with an aftermarket one (such as the Zalman VF900)

TBH you'll be lucky if the card isn't ruined, as if its overheating quite a lot over the past while, there may be irreversible damage done.

I would say your PSU is probably fine, and the problem lies with the card, but putting in the other GFX card you're getting a loan of should decide that.
