Eircom went down last night in my area but came back on some time last night, but ever since then my connection on MW2 is on 1 red bar and im finding the game impossible to play.

Not saying im great at the game or anything but my K:d in a match would be 3 or 4 to 1 usually, but with my connection like this the bullets don't even register as hits, the game ain't lagging or anything but enimies just ain't dropping!

Last game i had today was 7:19 omg!!! And that was 2 last stand kills and a claymore!

Same with me. I had no problems with connection (3 or 4 green bars all the way) until about 2 weeks ago now I’m luck if I get 2 yellow bars. I’ve quit dozens of games over the last week because I’m just wasting my time and I’m sticking to Hardcore for now.

I can’t remember the last decent game of FFA or TDM I’ve had.

I think the penny has just dropped for me. In the game summary sheet, along the right hand side, there are red/yellow/green bars. Thanks to this thread, I'm now guessing that this is to do with connection speed? I always figured this was based on performance, and since I'm getting about 1:1 in games I thought 2 yellow bars meant I was average, but not great. Now I'm thinking that since I rarely get above the two yellow bars, I'm not as bad as I thought, and it's my connection that is struggling.

I've posted before in another thread about lag issues and how I appear in kill cam to not have used my gun, despite me firing up to 6 times from my perspective. Plus I can sit there for 3-4-5 minutes waiting to connect to a game. This is the first online game I've played, so I'm not 100% sure what is good/average/bad when it comes to connection speeds etc. and I had thought that 50ms ping speed was about standard.

So basically, I need to look at my wireless broadband connection with digiweb asap to see what is up.

Ive been wondering the same thing. Id be nearly certain I shot someone perfect and they wouldnt drop and then on Killcam it looks as if I havent even used the gun?

My connection varies between 3 and 2 bars. Saying that yesterday I got a 17 - 1 with the m16. Much prefer using the Sniper rifle though. It just feels more skillfull than running and spraying bullets all over the place.

Your problems probably aren’t related to your bb speeds. I’ve a 24MB line and I get red or yellow bars a lot of the time now. The problem lies with the location of the host. If the person hosting the game is in America our BB speeds aren’t really going to be quick enough to be instant. According to the IW forums there’s a patch to facilitate local region hosting by default which needs Microsoft approval before it’s rolled out. That should solve our problems. Until then were stuck with a lot of our opponents getting a 1-2 second head start in any face to face encounters. Very frustrating.

I was wondering about this because when i host or play in a private match- i always have the full green bars but hardly ever seem to get that playing a public match.

Thanks for a great and informative reply. :)

Also make sure your NAT status is set to Open. If it's set to strict you'll be limited in the games you can join. When you go to join a multiplayer game and you select X-Box live at the bottom of that menu is should say NAT Status: <whatever>.

The easiest way to set it back to Open is by restarting your router. I've been seeing a lot more green bars since I did this.

The fact that that our ping is shown in bars instead of numerically is absolutely ridiculous, the sooner they sort out all these bugs the better, a player from here should never be playing against someone in America, never ever.. Joke.

I'm not at home when I'm typing this, so can't really picture what you are describing there. Can you clarify when you should see the NAT status when using the XBox?

You select Multiplayer from the front screen, then what??

Sorry if this seems basic. Only new to the game so still making noob mistakes and not 100% familiar with the layouts etc. Thanks.

Select Multi-Player then X-Box Live from the next menu. This will bring you into the menus where you can choose your game type so it should read:

    Find a Match
    Private Match
    Create a Class
    <Something else>
    <Something else>

At the bottom of this menu it should give your NAT status. And that should read Open.

From a PC point of view .....This is just normal when you play a p2p fps ... Its not working and it will never work period .... Its even more depressing when you change your bars (now 4) to show as 10 ... you have to change something in the config ..

I was a host just once .. and omg what a different gameplay you get then !!! ... No lag whatsoever ... If you have just 1 or 2 bars you are screwed !! you will get owned

The host advantage is ridiculous in this game, atleast in cod4 you could force yourself to be host everytime so u didnt have to worry about a ****e connection but i just tend to leave games where i dont have atleast 3 green bars cause your fighting a losing battle otherwise

i dont know iv played a few games with two bars and done quiet well u just have to be abit more aware to get the upper hand on host .cod is not the worst when it comes to host .;)
Did u ever try playing gears of war online sometimes u can have a 4 second lag on shots in that game .One of the main reasons i gave up playing that game.:(

As said above I think a lot of it has to do with were your host is. e.g. one time I was playing a match and the host had EIRE as his clan tag, obviously meaing he's Irish. He sounded like he was from Dublin on his headset, anyway I had 4 green bars that match. The next game however he left and the host changed resulting in me having 2 yellow bars, at which point I left.

Also since the update when you're searching for a game it says 'Searching for <70ms ping.' Usually for me it goes up to 100 ms before I get a game. I think it takes longer to get a game but usually when I do get one I'm normally on three green bars.

Yeah it seems to be improved since the update but the problem i find is that if one american joins the lobby, it migrates to them the next match so for one game he has yellow bars but then the next everyone apart from him has yellow bars. An improvement in finding a local host is badly needed but i doubt IW will fix it

Okay, I did that and it says Strict. So I guess I'll have to look at changing this.

I've found this good guide on how to set it to Open instead, although the OP did mention possible risks to the XBox...

Any word on when this patch is going to be rolled out ? and will it be available for Xbox Live ?

I have the same problem with a lot of games where I get my ass kicked and have to shoot people multiple times and they seem to be able to kill me with 2 - 3 rounds. Really irritating!

modern warfare 2 is not balanced

    Fixed for you ;)

Anyway even with 3/4 bars on Eircom 3MB BB mine still lags. I think there is a problem with the line as all people trying to play the game in my area have the same problem...
