Echoes of the Stardust fire.

Just reading about the appalling fire at a Russian night club. It bore all the similarities of the Stardust fire. The authorities in this case are going for the juggler, it was started by an indoor fireworks display and the place only had a single exit.

RIP to all those that perished.

Wasn't it Russia where people got blinded my a Laser light show last year?

We should be thankful for our regulations....

Our regulations are still not good enough. We still have over crowding at venues. Go to England or the US and you will often see staff appointed to keep track of numbers entering and leaving the buildings.

Sad to hear about this. Was it caused by pyrotechnics? Thought I heard something like that on the radio.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think indoor pyrotechnics have caused fires in nightclubs before.
How many more times must this happen until something is done about it.

Yes a few times, one quite recently at Rhode Island in 2003 with the loss of over 90 lives.

The authorities in this case are going for the juggler,

Do you mean that they're getting straight to the point of the case or that the fire was caused by a juggler?

Yeah good regulations but i don't think anyone got charged for the stardust fire? The owner of the Russian nightclub got done straight away.

The sad fact is, that you can have many rules and regulations as you want.

But they are useless if they are not adhered to and not policed!

Too right. Like the old saying "If you play with fire you're going to get burned". Unfortunately a wonderful spectacle turned into a nightmare.

No common sense whatsoever and it's cost 100 or so people their lives.

    RIP

I dont know about that, I have been completely wedged into pubs and clubs in London just as much if not more than here.

It's a sad state of affairs when nightclubs would rather risk people's safety and pack people in in order to make a profit.

I thought they were killed in the stampede rather than the fire itself?

It's the same in my town. And it will continue to happen until there is another fire killing 100 customers.

It's very sad to see something of that nature happening, but who the hell thought it would be a good idea to have an indoor fireworks show.

Obviously a decision of some bird brains

Arrests have been made over the matter. If guilty who ever is responsible deserve long sentences. Unlike the Rhodie Island fire I doubt if there will be much compensation for family's of victims.

Having seen the video, it appears that the ceiling was straw panels in it!

Makes it an even madder idea!

unless fire exits were chained shut, it's not that close to the Stardust.

    Tragedy all the same.

The authorities in this case are going for the juggler,

Why are they going for an entertainer, when they should clearly be pursuing who was responsible?

(I jest, I jest, I know you meant jugular, I was making a poor attempt at a funny.)

RIP to those who died, and my wishes to their families and loved ones.

According to this and other report the fire was literally caused by a juggler.

I am shure anyone involved from the management right down to the entertainers would be hauled in for questioning. Apparently the fireworks used were for strictly outdoor use only so this would put a lot of responsibility on the pyrotechnics.

Very close as negligence seems to have played a major part in both cases.

Jesus. I grew up beside where the Stardust was and there are still a lot of families in that area that lost someone there. It's heartbreaking.

    Will people never learn?

I was in a nightclub once and they had a display of Fire Twirling and the guy let go of one of the ... er ... fire twirly things. It flew across the club but luckily didn't hit anyone

It was also lucky that the night club wasn't made of straw :(

People need to understand it's about making as much money as possible in the shortest time, with the least amount of investment you can get away with. (If you are going to have a club with extra fire escapes you will need extra staff to keep people from sneaking in - another unwanted expense). The chances of a disaster like this happening are so small as to be insignificant, so worth the risk considering the money to be made.

Vienna from Ultravox was number two in the UK charts at the time, That song always reminds me of the incident.

I think this clip shows how/where it started and just how fast the smoke spread.

Also with excessive drink involved people are not exactly going to be able to coordinate themselves.

I remember the Stardust fire like it was only yesterday, I was only four when it happened. I remember going into superquinn in northside shopping centre a few days after the fire and you could feel the sadness in the air even at such a young age.

An event like this is felt by all ages young to old and my deepest sympathies go out to all the people who lost a loved one....

May they all Rest in Peace.

i doubt it had anything to do with that, not everyone would have been drinking excessively.thats just your take on it.mass panic would have happened regardless of people drinking or not,its human nature especially around fire.the lights went off ,place filled with smoke etc. what with there being only one exit/entrance to the place, everybody would have gone in that direction .

I worked on revenating a night club in donegal less than a year ago that has no firealarm protection. No worries about fire officers etc..It is a total disgrace,if you have enough money in this country the rules dont apply to you!
