Ubuntu wont let me watch DVD

    Hi

    For some reason when i try to play a dvd on ubuntu i get this message 'Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disc.' Where exactly do i get these plugins?

    Funny thing is i tried the same DVD on windows xp and it played.

    just go to a terminal and type (or copy/paste) "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras". When it prompts you for a password just enter your login password. Once it completes you will be able to play DVDs perfectly.

    He probably didn't. If it was a purchased PC it most likely had some DVD player software pre-installed. All included as part of the purchase price.

    Restricted extras doesn't include libdvdcss2, I remember because I installed Karmic on my aunts laptop and had to download a .deb package to get DVD's playing.

    Here it is, last on the page:
