New iPhone 3GS Internet Connection Problem

    Hey guys.

I bought a new iPhone 3Gs from o2 the other day and signed up to a bill pay contract.

Everything works fine except that when a Wifi connection is unavailable I'm unable to connect to the internet via 2G or 3G.

This has been the case from when I first got the phone.

I'm told I should see either "3G2 or "E" in the top left of my screen alongside the "o2.ie", but neither of these appear.

I've had my iPhone sitting alongside another person's and had there's display the "E" symbol while mine showed nothing.

I've tried turning the phone off/on, tried resetting network settings, tried reinstalling iTunes and doing a restore on the phone all to no avail.

    My current APN settings are:

    Cellular Data:
    apn: internet
    username:
    password:

    MMS:
    apn: internet
    Username:
    Password:
    MMSC:http:/mmsc.mms.o2.ie:8002
    MMS Proxy: 62.40.32.40:8080
    MMSUA Prof URL:

3g is enabled and data roaming is switched off.

Finally, my VPN settings are unconfigured.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

It would be a terrible let down to have to send the phone back to Apple to be repaired less than a week after purchasing it!

The only thing there that seems applicable is setting the APN to "open.internet" instead of "internet" which has no effect.

    Nobody has any ideas no?

I guess I'll have to send it back to apple then...

Id get onto O2 first. Its more than likely an account error or something its unlikely the phone is faulty. Maybe then have to enable data or something.

I went into the store where I bought the phone alright but to be honest I doubt the sales assistant's expertise.

He tried turning the phone on and off, resetting the network settings and replacing my sim card with a new one but then said he hadn't a clue what the problem was.

I tried to register for the o2 forum to get them to have a look at my account settings and see if there was any problem there but I haven't had my account authorised yet - hopefully I'll to post over there first thing in the morning and they can sort it out for me.

Would any more of you agree that it's more likely to be an account error than a hardware problem??

It's not jailbroken. I only got it the other day so I haven't had the chance to even loook into that side of things...

Is jailbreaking essentially unlocking the phone from the o2 network? Does it invalidate my warrenty?

ahh... better take it back to o2 then. might be a factory defect. like when my cousin got her iphone, her charger didnt work so we had to bring the charger back a day later.

It was a problem with my account settings - one of the guys on the o2 forums was able to sort it out for me, all working now!
