Just did the NCT and failed (no surprise there). Its a 97 Mazda.

I had planned to buy a new car in the new year (have roughly 6000 saved for this).

    The list of fails are:

    - 2 back tyres
    - A side lamp
    - Emissions
    - Lights off track (hello? have they seen the state of the roads??)
    - Ball joint

How much do you think it would cost?

do you think government will offer a scrappage scheme?

Have till 21st Jan to retest

the emissions and ball joint would be the most expensive things on the list,

if you planned on buying a new car then just trade it in i guess.

or you can repair it get a nct and sell it on,

It is worthless as a trade in regardless of nct I would say.
    What mazda is it?

From your other posts it's a '97 Mazda 323. Without NCT, the car has no value. I'd give it away for free or scrap it and use the advantage of being a cash buyer to get a good discount of your next car.

    - 2 back tyres...............................................€100
    - A side lamp................................................€35
    - Emissions.....................you'd need to get that checked to find out why it failed
    - Lights off track ...........................................€20-30
    - Ball joint.....................................................€150-200 fitted approx.

    about what the cars worth

2 budget tyres prob no more than 80.
ball joint 35 plus 30 max to fit, (providing no wheel alignment is done).
emissions need to be checked, can you put up your emission test results?
headight alignment a tenner, providing there's nothing wrong with the adjusters/headlamps.
car not worth selling, but not the end of the world to be repaired...

Thats bad advice, he gets the new ball joint fitted, doesn't get the car tracked, goes back for his Re-test....- fails again because the tracking is off.

    Are you a mechanic?

Im assuming its not a track rod end ball joint, otherwise he really should get wheel alignment reset, but it sounded like a wishbone ball joint, which (in my experience) wouldnt knock the tracking off so much as to warrant getting the wheels realigned. Plus OP is trying to do this as cheap as.
    Yes I am a mechanic.

    Thanks guys.

Just trying to get my head around

    A) Do I fix it and keep it for another 2 years
    B) Buy a new car. When I say a new car, Im talking brand new - have been waiting to see if they can offer a scrappage scheme of which it is very very doubtful. Are there good car deals out there? Can you haggle for a new car?
    C) If I buy a new car for around 12000, I imagine getting finance for 6000 would be fairly hard (banks and all that).

6000 is not much to ask for, obviously depends on your work situation and all that, but i wouldnt see it being too hard.

    €35????

Side light bulbs are about 3.99 in decent petrol stations, probably less in motor factors.

Even if you only replace the wishbone ball joint, one should always get the car track afterwards. I see that at least once a week, car comes back for a simple Re-test, ball joint was replaced, but the car wasn't tracked afterwards.

The car fails again, and the shouting starts. I have to explain to the customer, that they have to go back to the garage, get the alingnment done, and come back for another Re-test, and that they will have to pay another 28 €.....

I don't need that kind of hassle, just because there are mechanics out there, who are simply to lazy, to track a car, and hope they will just get away with it.

    Thats my experience.......
