Can anyone recommend a site that allows you to download net nanny type software for free ?
I've done a search to see if there were any threads on this topic already and I didn't see any.

Vista and windows 7 have parental controls built into the operating system.

There is also the free option of Parenting :)

k9 is free and very good, set it too minimum, so that it never interfers with proper internet use, but blocks all porn, bomb making, gore, etc

if you don't mind it being circumvented by someone who knows about computers, try open dns. Will filter out most of the crap you don't want coming into your house. Even better you can set this as your router dns so it filters throughout the house.

If your child is smart enough to look up your isp dns servers and enter them manually then yeah it's game over. Hopefully by the time they can do that they're old enough not to need it.

Edit: Perhaps as a small additional advice i should just mention... any barricade that you put up. If they get around it you probably wont know i can only account for my mindset, but i'd feel like it was fair game if there was a block put up that if you got around it you get onto the computer. A better method might be to install monitoring services... block extremely obvious stuff but go on the principle that they don't know what you've seen or what you haven't. It encourages accountability and responsibility. This is of course assuming they're at the stage where they know if they're doing something they shouldn't be

Many thanks for the replies so far. I trying to prevent a 14 year old boy from going onto sites that are inappropriate. My computer uses XP and I had been thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 so it's interesting to hear that there is some parental supervision built into it.

K9 is to be recommended, provides full logging and a nice loud barking dog when something not allowed comes up.
