Will be on the hunt for a new (to me) car in the new year. Currently looking at the Citroen C4... just wondering how much I should pay for an '05 1.4 petrol with reasonable mileage on it?

I've been reading here lately that carzone are overpriced... where should I look instead?

I'm in Dublin and would prefer not to have to travel too far.

Use carzone as a guide for prices. CArzone isn't overpriced, its the prices of some cars on the site that are overpriced.
http://www.cbg.ie/default.aspx is good also and http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/ is another. These sites can be used for research and possibally your c4.
The cheapest way to buy a car is privately, but this has it's risks (no warrenty etc)
    Happy hunting.

So how much is an '05 C4 worth?

If I were to go into a dealer and 5,950 was on the ticket like say this car how much should I actually pay?

it'll be a 5 year old citroen in 4 weeks' time - the things were heavily discounted. I really wouldn't pay above 3k IMO.

Look, it's the same car as a 307. Both are not exactly popular. I'd buy a 6 or 7 year focus or civic ahead of one any day. Better cars in every way. If you're hell bent on one buy diesel

You havn't a snowballs chance in hell of getting a 05 C4 (or P307) for 3k, not even at auction, unless it's dodgy. We sold a 02 P307 two weeks ago for 3250, which was way cheaper than any other P307 advertised around.

Where is the garage going to get a 05 C4 cheap enough to sell it for 3k ? The person who has a 05 one now and is interested in a new car is highly unlikely to trade it in if that's all they are going to get for it. People aint fools.

From my experience watching the market very closely for the last few years, used cars don't suddenly get more plentiful and cheaper in January. Typically the prices don't soften until March or April, until the dealer's lots are getting full with trade-ins.

You might have misinterpreted me, lifer.

I was voicing my opinion of what I think of those sh*teboxes - as did EPM in the thread that followed mine.

3k - that's how little I think of the yokes, The standing or retail value is a totally different ballgame.

I don't really like the focus or the civic... this is the problem, trying to find a reasonable alternative... open to suggestions.

Don't know what's not to like about the focus - one of the best fords of all time. Civic will never let you down.

Try a corolla, octavia or astra for reasonable quality, dependability and running costs.

Waste of time getting into the semantics of 'what something is worth' the way the industry is at the moment

You could just go for the C4 and accept an 'also ran'.

    Fair point.

I'll look into the Focus. It's not quite as bad as the civic :P

The C4 is quieter and rides better than a focus. It also arguably has a nicer interior. The focus is more fun to drive however.

The diesels are the same in both cars.
