As the end of the year is creeping up on us Ive been reflecting on the metal releases of 09.Personally speaking I think it was as good a year as we have ever had.Amazing new releases from Cannibal Corpse,Cattle Decapitation,Lamb of God and many more. The major disappointment was Slayer's frankly lacklustre return to the studio although I felt let down by Nile's new one too.Chimaira's latest was poor enough compared to their own fairly high standards.

Anywhos,Ive picked some of what I thought were the top releases of the year and have added some youtube goodness. Why not do the same!

Job For A Cowboy - Ruination

    Absu - Absu

Goatwhore - Carving Out The Eyes Of God

The Black Dahlia Murder - Deflorate

Anaal Nathrakh - In The Constellation Of The Black Widow

Man Must Die - No Tolerence For Imperfection

Seconding Goatwhore, Black Dahlia Murder and Anaal Nathrakh. I liked Genesis by Jfac but I couldn't get into Ruination.

    Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse

    Behemoth - Evangelion

    Mumakil - Behold The Failure

Gorod - Process Of A New Decline

    AA= - #1

Man Must Die's album is great :D

Numero Uno of the year is most definitely:

Between The Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect.

    Amorphis - Skyforger

    Hacride - Lazarus

    Obscura - Cosmogenesis

    Ghost Brigade - Isolation Songs

My album of the year would be Evile's Infected Nations. I ****ing love this album :D . Didn't think Id end up preferring anything to Crack the Skye but this album is brilliant. Much much better then the first.

I did really enjoy World Painted Blood too. I think it's better than Endgame :pac:

Stratovarius' album Polaris was pretty good

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I actually enjoyed Nile's new album. Dream Theater and Dark Funeral had decent enough releases. I thought Gorgoroth's latest album was quite poor though with the exception of about one track.

    Converge - Axe To Fall

Despised Icon - Day Of Mourning

    Belphegor - Pestapokalypse VI

Blood Red Throne - Souls Of Damnation

    Salt The Wound - Ares

The Red Chord - Fed Through The Teeth Machine

The first that jumps to mind is Dream Theater's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. Really enjoyed it and thought it was a great improvement on Systematic Chaos.

The new Alice in Chains album is pretty good as well and I also really enjoyed Stratovarious' Polaris.

Didn't even realise Nile had a new album out, I'll have to give it a listen.

If I had to vote one it'd probably be BCSL

Black Crowes - Into the Frost

    Mastodon : Crack The Skye
Warrior Soul : Destroy The War Machine
    Kiss : Sonic Boom

    1. Manowar - Thunder In The Sky

I've picked my two favourite songs from this album:

    Die With Honor

Father - This was released in 16 languages!

    2. Ensiferum - From Afar

    3. Devildriver - Pray For Villains

I also agree with some of the above: Behemoth, Anaal Nathrakh, Absu and Job For A Cowboy.

Album of the Year IMO goes to Alice In Chains.
    14 years worth waiting for

Katatonia - Night Is The New Day
Took me ages to get into this one. Much better than previous album

Paradise Lost -Faith Divides Us Death Unites Us.
Great Song, video gives you a headache

Rammstein, Amorphis and Porcupine Tree are up there too.

Yeah, i suppose. But I am a bit fan-boyish when it comes to bands like slayer/megadeth in that i'll probably like any release by them once its not total muck.

I do like the sound of that Evile album now that you mention it

Was pleasantly surprised by the new record, had been a huge fan of them before Layne passed away. DuVall's vocals are good both on record and more importantly, live. There just isn't ayone else who sounds like them

    YES

If you liked the Mastodon record, you should try Baroness, if you havn't already. There are similarities between the two, 'the red record' is probably my favourite still. Also Katatonia's new record, it's probably their best to date. Bands like BTBAM and the red chord are more of an acquired taste I agree, I'm a big fan of Paul Wagganer's guitar playing (btbam)

Baroness are great, I much preferred Blue Record to Crack The Skye to be honest. The Red Chord album is pretty good but I have yet to think it's amazing, and I think I say a bit too much about how much i like BTBAM :D

I'm new to the board so wouldn't have seen that:) Been a fan since Alaska; Colors was my favourite record of 2007 - The great misdirect is a really good record but I think I had my expectations set too high after Colors, there really wasn't any way I could have seen them topping that - I had a couple of other red chord albums and thought they were just ok, I have never been a huge fan of the 'metalcore' vocal style, think that's why I have never fully understood the appeal of bands like Converge, Coalesce etc - The music is good, just I find the vocals grating after a while - Opeth probably have the right mix of death and clean vocals, as do Btbam ofc:)

I thought it was a very disappointing year for music. There isn't one rock/metal album this year that stood out for me.

Calvin Harris' album was about the best new thing I listened to all year but of course that's not /\/\ETAL

Hah, perhaps so. Perhaps i'm just getting old.

One thing I did notice from having a listen to some of the youtube tracks posted here was Blood Red Throne's remarkably similar riff to Slayer's Killing Fields.:confused:

I really didn't get the hype around either of these albums. I thought Mastodon's was good on the first few spins but after a while I found it drawn out. And I just plain didn't like Axe To Fall.

    Each to his own however.
