What do you regard as the best one?

I reckon this should get it, given the pressure and what was at stake............

Totally agree wit your video. Had to be Y E Yang's second shot on 18 at USPGA to absolutely sicken Tiger.

YE Yang all the way. I've seen 20 handicappers chip in from the side of the green.

Yang, an unknown, was leading a major going down the 72nd, had the greatest player ever on his back and however many thousand of people in the crowd willing him to throw it away.

He had 200+ left to a tight pin and a huge tree in his way. Most people would have played safe but he went gung ho and pulled off a remarkable shot. I remember sitting watching him hit it and being in awe. I had no idea how he's managed to pull it off.

How about this?It was 176 yards with an 8 iron afterall..

Sky had a poll on the tv recently.... Yang, Westwood's chip of the dirt in Portugal recently, Lowry at Baltray on the 2nd playoff hole (not a pro at the time but...), think Ross Fisher was in there?, McIlroy Delicate bunker shot in Dubai on the 72nd hole to set up his first win....
Westwood was leading it naturally (it was a viewers poll) because he had just won the race to Dubai.
Yang's shot doesn't have an equal in my opinion... the fact that it's the 72nd hole of a Major, playing against a golfing god etc....
    Lowry my 2nd choice.

It must just be me but when I saw Yang's shot on the 72nd of the PGA and every time I see it since, I am convinced by his body language that he started that ball much further left than he intended only for it to drift to the right with the wind a little more than he initially thought it would. Look at the video again and see what you think!

Tigers 8 iron doesn't really do it for me either. Don't get me wrong, it was a great shot, but it was with an 8 iron. He should be deadly accurate with that club. 176 yards sounds incredible but with a little wind and maybe some air density factors helping then maybe it wasn't that much further than the average top level pro out there.

Then there is McIlroys 3 wood from 266 yards over water and into the wind on a par 5. I can't remember where. Absolutely hit it perfectly, and dead straight, and almost perfect distance and made the eagle putt to boot. That was some shot with a difficult club, crazy long carry and he controlled it perfectly!! That gets my vote!

Holes in One are always singled out because of the wow factor, but are no better than a shot which finishes a foot or two away. They simply involve a little more luck. Olsens is the perfect example. If you look at the pace his ball was spinning back at he should have had a 15 or 20 foot birdie putt. Complete fluke that it went in-off. Couldn't possibly be shot of the year! As for Vijays................

I think they said at the time that he was 300 yards from the flag. It was a great strike but it was low risk. If it had been over water then it would have been a remarkable shot.

How about Rafa Echenique at the BMW International Open? Great shot, he nearly caught Nick Dougherty but just missed out!

Yang's shot was incredible, nothing came close. Westwoods bunker shot on 18? Are you serious? He was 60 feet away if not more.....cmon lads...leave your emotions at the door.

worst shot of the year has to be chad campbells wedge in the playoff at the masters.....

I have a different contender, Johnny. I think Kenny Perry's chip (3rd) shot at the 17th in the Masters was the worst. I still cannot believe he didn't putt it.

To be fair, I suppose it should be shortlisted for a bad club selection award. I was really sorry he didn't win it. He's a great human being.

    +1

If i remember rightly, wasn't it a 6 iron and a real danger that he would send it straight into the bunker face/lip? Brilliant shot, albeit let down by what happened after.

WE're talking shot of the year here.....are you seriously telling me that Westwoods fairway bunker shot to the front portion of the green (about 60 feet), was in the running? I watch lots of golf and the British open is no different. I watched him make three putt, I watched him make 3 bogeys in the last four. No doubt it was a fantastic shot to get to the green from the bunker but certainly not anywhere close to shot of the year or even a mention.

Wise up. If this thread was all just about deciding 'THE' shot of the year then it would have closed after post 1. If you watch as much golf as you say you do then you'd appreciate just how hard a shot Westwood had in the Open. Definitely worthy of a mention in a thread like this.

Did anyone see the 3 wood Camilo Villagas hit 262 yards yesterday for his albatross, cracking shot

a shot doesnt need to finish beside the flag to be great, and what happens after it has no bearing on how good it is at the time. westwood was faced with a incredibly difficult, do or die bunker shot on the 72nd hole of the british open while he was one off the lead.

it does help though! And when you talk about shot of the year - you look for shots that are under huge pressure, of very high difficulty and that end up close - thats why Yang's shot is without equal this year (imho). It could be one of the greatest shots of the decade if you were doing that poll aswell :o

    Under huge pressure?

One of the lead on the final hole of the Open with the chance of winning your first major after many near misses? That's pressure.

    Of very high difficulty?

High lip of a bunker in front of him but still a longish iron required. Good chance that if he doesn't catch it 100% it's going to smack back of the face of the bunker and his Open dreams are over. That's difficult.

    End up close?

Could Westwood actually have got it any closer? IIRC, the lip of the bunker prevented him for going at the pin or indeed anywhere near it. The assumption before he hit it was that he'd be doing very well to get it anywhere near the green. Check.

mcdowell nearly pulled off shot of the yr with his 2nd to 18 last night! :)

My vote goes to Yang aswell. Unreal.

Anyone remember Angel Cabreras 3 wood on the 18th hole of the World Matchplay in Spain against Ross Fisher a month or two ago?? Amazing golf shot, and he was blind to the green.

Not sure why you are going after this, but its not anywhere in the top 10 golf shots of the year - fact. Nice shot, but seve would have put a high draw on it and landed it 10 feet from the hole.

    Likewise.

When did this become a top ten contest though? Seve would have stuck it in the car park. And got up and down.
