    Well lads,

Need help ASAP. Need to know where the timing marks are located on a 1.6 TD engine in the Golf, shes a MK2. Is there any notches in the cam/pump sprockets as I cant seem to see any.
Also is there any TDC marks on the timing belt cover that I should know about?

BTW used to be a 1.3 petrol.

when at top dead centre on cylinder 1 you can put flat bar into a slot at the rear of the camshaft, you need to take off the rocker cover to do this,I usually just slot a spanner in thats near the correct thickness. The camshaft sprocket can be moved to get the timing correct once the camshaft is locked.
the crankshaft mark is on the flywheel, theres a hole on the top of the gearbox that you look through to see the marks

I used a bodyfile blade in the slot on the camshaft.

Notch on the injector pump pulley lines up with a groove type mark on the mounting plate for the pump (corresponding to the 12 o clock point of the pump pulley).

vw4life is right about the crankshaft TDC mark. On top of bellhousing there is a circular plug about 25-30mm in dia which screws out. You should see a V on the bellhousing underneath. This lines up with a mark on the flywheel but it's hard enough to spot.

If just replacing the belt you could just mark up everything with tippex or paint and then just put everything back the way it came off.

Jeez it's a long time since I did one of these !

The cam pulley is on a taper.

Loosen the bolt and give it a tap to free it. Tension the belt and then tighten the bolt once the belt has been tightened.

Aside from the cam timing, on a Mk2 the final timing of the pump needs to be done with a dial gauge.

It has been a long time since I was near a 1.6 but is it not just a matter of slipping a drill bit in through the slot on the gear?

Just doing a belt it will start and run pretty well by just pinning the pump but it should be set for plunger lift to be right. very often they will run slightly off unless set up with the dial gauge and sometimes you will get away without it.

    Didn't know that.

I was always really pissy about getting the flywheel exactly on the mark. It is alot more exact than on engines with the mark on a small crank pulley and a fecker to do when on your own! :o

Yeah, if you think about it that’s whay the pump is mounted on slots to allow it twist for final timing. Did you never use a timing light on the old ones? Inductive pickup on the pipe to number one injector and timed off the flywheel mark same as a petrol.
It was great when the TDI’s happened and we could time the pumps dymanically with a scan tool.
