I;m listening to him on Setanta for the Ulster game.

Is it just me or is he a really good co-commentator?? Ariculate, knowledgable and seems to know the right time to come in with his opinion. It's great to hear some real expertise about line outs and front row scrummaging during a game like this.

Think he is much better tonight. Heard him a few weeks ago and thought he was dreadful!

He was on RTE for the France All Blacks game last weekend.
He, of course, knows the game, and is articulate, more so when compared to the general RTE commentator

First time I've really listened to him tonight and I think it's impressive for a guy whose new to it.

Brings a level of knowledge about forward play that others don't.

Get Ralph "State the Obvious" Keyes out and bring Ward/Sheahan for all the games.

Way way better than that eejit Donal fuppin Lenihan

Genuinely can't listen to him comentate. Has to be one of the most biased around

He's been superb tonight. Proper insight into the game and he actually sees what's going on. I always wonder what game the other RTE guys are watching as they call half the play wrong.

I think he's excellent, quicker rte snap him up to do some of the 6N games the better. Although he had a funny one during the Argentina v Wales game, Argentinian front row kept getting penalised and he came out with: "Well he (the ref) wont be on any of the front row's xmas card list this summer anyway!"

He said that again tonight!!!! And 'what's his voice' corrected him. :D:D:D

Got to say, I criticised him after his first few outings on setanta which were absolutely horrific, but he seems to be getting into the swing of things a bit. The first match or two that he was co-commentating for were fred cogley-esque in their cringeworthiness.

The same as Crash, I thought he was awful the first few times I heard and couldn't understand how he still had a job. But he's gotten far better and seems a lot less nervous now and he more eager to get in with his analysis.

i thought he was bad at the start.
i still think he is bad now.
i think the accent contributes to it though which is unfair on my part.

will he be doing the munster match tonight?

You obviously never heard Brian Moore doing an English game, Jonathon Davies on Wales or Reggie doing a Leinster game

I find Brian Moore to be very fair actually. Michael Corcoran on RTE Radio and Daire O Brien on Setanta are absolutely unbelieveable for bias also.

+ 1 for Lenihan,I think i heard him say "we should have got a penalty" about the Ospreys match last night. Biased to hell he is.

Gotta give Sheahan time to get comfortable, radio's ridiculously hard at the start, it's completely unnatural to be talking into a mic while looking at what's going on and if you get too close you get a thing called popping which disturbs the sound quality so you'll have a producer in your ear telling you to move the mic. In time I think he'll be very good.

I think sheehan is really good co commentator.

He can be pretty funny at times too. Came out with a classic about hookers throwing the ball in straight in a line out about two games ago.

I can't understand why RTE have George Hamilton doing some of the games, the guy admits he doesn't even like rugby.

Yeah, good job by Frankie on the All Blacks game.

I'd rather George than that Blackrock College gimp Ryle Nugent! He does my head in!!

Because we're a small country without the money to waste on a rake of commentators, and Hamilton happens to be an excellent commentator.

I actually like Ryle. His enthusiasm is infectious. :o

Ryle Nugent and Geogre Hamilton and r both shocking. At least Ryle know a little bit about rugby. Hamilton doesn't have a clue. I'd love if it was Ward and sheahan

    Ralph "State the Obvious" Keyes

You actually need a state the obvious guy tbh. George Hammilton shouldn't be even allowed to watch matches on telly, he's so bad (I don't think he's any better at other sports either).

For my money, Liam Tolland is the business. Technical knowledge + being able to empart that knowledge. I'd say Frankie Sheahan could develop but he's a little to much on the fence at the moment. I'd rather he came in a bit more to indicate errors/illegal activity/stragies etc (a la Austin Healy who is excellent imho). He's obviously a smart guy with a lot of hands on experience and not to be too unfair has watched an awful lot of rugby at close quarters. His quick turn around is to his advantage. It's obvious to anyone watching the game that the evolution is so fast now that even a couple of years out of the game mean your knowledge is little better than the average spectator.

The muppet show that RTE persist with for their "analysis" wrecks my head. There must be twenty guys who could do the job better at this stage in Ireland. Yet the safe "entertainment" option is persisted with. They have the same job for life attitude as Sky (who make my skin crawl but at least with RTE there's often another channel to switch to). One token rugby expert on a panel of four does not make analysis nor does a golden years player of the boot b*llock and spit generation help much in todays game. If they want pub level analysis they could find a cast of thousands to fill the role- mightn't actually be a bad thing to have a fan and two actual analysts as a change to the format. A few Mossy's or Fiachra's would be more entertaining than the Hook/Pope show

"Because we're a small country without the money to waste on a rake of commentators, and Hamilton happens to be an excellent commentator"

I'm sorry I just don't buy into this argument, people throw this out as an excuse for everything. The people are there to do the job. Ryle appears to be the number one commentator at the moment like him or hate him he likes rugby and he knows a bit about the game. Hugh Cahill is in RTE at the moment and is really good commentator too. The "Rake" of commentators are already there it's just the order in which they are is wrong.

I don't know that much about soccer but I'm sure George is very good at that and very enthusatic about it

Keep in mind that you usually need a commentator and an expert. Two experts would sound shíte.

Hamilton has been commenting on rugby a lot longer than Nugent has.

Neither of them is a primary commentator though. They're both there for their expert opinion rather then to actually narrate the game.

I haven't heard Frankie commentate yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was initially poor. It takes time to get used to that kinda thing - and its not as if there are scores of great commentators around anyway.

I'd love to see Emmet Byrne do some commentary. He's an excellent pundit for Setanta.

Heard him for the first time during the Autumn internationals for RTE.
I thought he was very good.

Real insight into forward play that fancy-dan backs like Keyes and Ward would know nothing about. :D
