    Not a lot.

But he is still the childs father so why shouldn't he have this information ?

Know necessary information for his child's well being and what state services may be used on his child's behalf?

I'd go with the obvious, just ask him what he needs it for! If he needs it for something genuine he should have no problem explaining.

He shouldn't need to explain any request for information on his child. The boy's his just as much as he's hers. And he may need it just in case there's a medical emergency or something of the sort.

Loads of "official" reasons he might need it.

Applying for some sort of benefit/tax relief/allowance, and naming his son as a dependant?

    etc.

Most obvious reason is he is getting tax credit for his son. He is classed as a single parent as you are not together so he gets a single parents tax free allowance.

he would need it opening a credit union/bank account for the child

Swizz lets take it down a notch please. OK it's an oft emotive subject but no reason whatsoever to go off on one. This extends generally too. Thanks.

    Tax credits probably
Also with money laundering rules these days it can be difficult to open Post office or bank accounts. Maybe he want to open an a/c in his sons name and lodge some money. Maybe for college in a few years

Just give the information, no reason to withhold it. Not that you did withhold it.

He'd probably get the information from Revenue anyway
