I normally don't venture near this forum, but i thought I'd pop in to pay tribute to the great Liam Clancy. An Irish Legend and one of the most influential musicians to have ever lived. R.I.P.

I met Liam once a long time ago in McCurtain Street in Cork , and he sang a song with my late father there on the street , I will never forget that , he was a pure gentleman ,its the end of an era

We will never see his like again , Rest in Peace Liam , you will never be forgotten.

RIP, a gentleman its fair to say, trad/folk isn't my bag at all but he was one of the few I could listen to if he came on the radio.

You too Sundew! Every time I hear it, and his version of Red is the Rose I well up something awful.Whether it was the lyrics, the melody, his voice or his partnership with Tommy, I dont know the whole package was ....like a good pint.. perfection, and great memories come flooding back

Saw Liam perform in Cork Opera House earlier this year with Danu - such an emotional performance, especially when he spoke about the new documentary of his life "The Yellow Bittern" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52mMuW2P38c
including lots of old footage of himself and his brothers in their heyday in New York etc. He said there was no joy in being the last man standing...

May he rest in peace - and deepest sympathy to his family in Helvick.

Liam did a remarkable job on this song, as he did with Bogles other classic war lament, The Green Fields of France. A great loss to Irish music scene, RIP.

Nice simple and touching tribute to Liam from Christy Moore on The Late Late Show.

He sang and dedicated 'John O'Dreams' to him.

Just saw this on the BBC, terrible news :(
Always came across as a nice, genuine bloke.

His interview with Tubridy a few years ago was great

I'm reeling from this sad news.. He lived in Ring, near Dungarvan Co. Waterford, my hometown and he was well known around the pubs etc a real character and always had time for everyone. He was a wonderfully talented singer who did Ireland proud..

A great Irish musician and story teller. I've heard a few people in the media claiming that Liam and the Clancy Brothers were the group who inspired a lot of American folk singers to return to their story telling ways. Someone else stated that the Clancy Brothers would've been Irelands first 'pop' group.

RIP Liam Clancy, he will be missed.

Another sad passing for Irish music :(

The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem were innovators. Their influence on Irish and folk music from all over the world can still be heard today. Liam's love for songs and storytelling was second to none, and I was lucky enough to see the great man live a couple of times over the past few years. Their songs and music will live forever.

The first song I ever learned:

    R.I.P.

    :(

Such sad news, a great man. In all that's going on around us, people like Liam make it easy to be proud to be Irish.

Ní bhéidh a leithéid ann arís. Terrible loss for this country. I know there's so many excellent songs, but his version of 'The Dutchman', is my favourite song ever!

Can anyone recommend an album by him or a collaboration. Apparently one of his albums with maken is supposed to be a classic...

There was a good Liam Clancy compilation released a couple of years ago called "Those Were The Days..." all the essential stuff is on it. Also get your hands on "The Makem and Clancy Concert", and The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem re-union concert from '84 which is available under a few different names
