Please help, i am in business for the past 3 years and due to the recession i am forced to close my business at the end of December, i am totally devasted, i am living in rented accomodation, I will be left with a debt of €100,000, am i entitled to any type of social welfare? I have never claimed anything so i'm not sure how to go about it. I'm utterly depressed.

very sorry to hear that, I am self employed as well and to be honest I would not be expecting much. Can you not write off the debts or are they personally guaranteed ?

Keep the head up, I know it's not much good to you but in America they say that you have to go broke a few times before you make it. The point is, if you did it once you can do it again, good luck

what general line of business where you in ?

You can make a claim for Jobseeker's Allowance. It will be means tested and you will have to meet with an inspector and probably provide your accounts etc.

Thanks Carol at least thats a little hope, when should i do that, before i close or do i have to wait until i close? If there are meetings to arrange and forms to fill i would prefer to do it before i close.

You will need a letter from your accountant confirming you have closed your business. He will also write to the revenue closing your business with them.
