Hi ive been looking for a standalone PVR to record normal analogue terrestrial TV but my search is coming up empty as all i can find are models compatible with DTT .

Can anyone suggest a PVR to replace my aging VCR, No preferences or requirements bar the ability to record analogue TV via a built in tuner as ive already got a KISS 1600 to playback the files.

    Thanks

A PMP ? What im after is a device with an integrated analogue tuner not something that requires VCR to output the signal.

errr did you just describe a television ?

my understanding of the latest archos is they have an internal tuner, and they can record and playback

You'll be hard pushed to find something like that. Some older dvd recorders with a built in hard drive have an analogue tuner like a liteon.

I stopped using my DVD recorder a long time ago, same as using the dvd player as well, everything is done digitally now on hard drives/Media PC's in my house.

Yes I had a couple of hard drive VCRs with analogue uhf tuners, but like snaps mentions, they haven't been used in years since I became used to the quality of digital tv.

I don't like when people don't answer someone's question and instead question why they want to do whatever they're proposing. However, what you're asking for is obsolete technology and that's why you won't find manufacturers making too many of these any more. I can't think of a good reason to recommend it, but if you want to buy, have a look on ebay as I'm sure there will be people looking to offload theirs. Just look for the usual good brand names.

I have a Philips DVDR3300H recorder that plays DVDs and records directly from an internal analogue tuner. Works well, but is a bit clunky, you have to record to the HDD and transfer to DVD, and the resolution cannot be changed afterwards. You can record from the 6 hour buffer which is great, and also record from the SCART. The HDD could be bigger, but it does what it says on the tin. I do not know if they do an updated one, but worth looking for, I would think.

Cannot remember when I got it.

Would any DVD Recorder with an analogue tuner work ?

    Don't see why not.
With my HDD VCR (DVDR with HDD really) I used to set the recorder input to Ext1, which was the scart input from the sky box. Then of course, when sky plus came along (sky box with integrated HDD recording), this made the setup obsolete and far less clunky as you didn't have to set the VCR to record and then set the sky box to switch channel at the same time to whatever you wanted to record. It could get confusing too, if you were watching the sky menu through the time-shifting extension of the VCR, because even in "real-time" there was a second or so delay.

Now, as I said, I don't like when people don't just answer someone's straightforward question, but I don't think you may be aware of better solutions that are open to you.

Two that spring to mind are - 1 - if you already have sky - why not get Sky+ which is a much simpler solution for the reasons I mentioned above, or 2 - why not get a Freesat receiver with integrated hard disk recorder, if not as a replacement for sky, then as an alternative for another room? If you have sky, then you have a satellite dish pointed at astra2, and this is the same satellite that is used for freesat.

Best option for you though I would say is to upgrade your sky box to a sky plus.
