Powerbook G4 (2005 Model) - Worth Repairing?

    Hi all,

A little advice if possible; I've searched for a mac repairs thread but haven't found a recent one (mods, pls move if necessary).

My Powerbook G4 has finally succumbed to the following ailments:

    - dead RAM card slot (I still have 512MB in the other one)
    - lid fails to latch closed
    - screen went last night - picture is badly pixelated. I can still move files etc, but that's about it.

Basically, my question is: Am I wasting my time looking for a repair quote or would it be more cost effective to, say, get a new iMac? I've had this machine for over 4 years now, so it's well out of warranty.

    Any thoughts/suggestions welcome :)

Probably best to get the quote first before deciding if its a waste of time or not.

Once youve got the quote, it should be simple enough to weigh up whether its worthwhile or not. In your calculations, don't forget to consider that you can probably part out some of the existing machine for a few quid on ebay.

Unfortunately most places will gouge when it comes to screen replacements. By now I'd say (sadly) that it might be time to either ugrade or, as the above poster said, scrounge parts from other machines to see if you can sort yourself out that way.

    Thanks all,

15.4 screen assembly on eBay is the guts of €250, not including shipping. And it's for a MacBook Pro, not a Powerbook, so I'm not too sure about compatibility...

    Oh well, t'was a good 4 years!

I had the dead RAM slot issue on a 17" Powerbook. A PRAM reset resolved it. I now have it working with 1.5GB :) Working very happily here as an iTunes server ! The screen issue is odd though, can you post a photo ? Might not be as bad as you might think ?

Thanks Ken, but I went and invested in a nice new iMac. The powerbook is working well enough to transfer my files off it, which counts for something!
