Sleeping Problems Affecting College

Hey I've been in Tralee IT since September, that's 12 weeks, but for the last 8 weeks I have had serious trouble sleeping. Instead of natural sleep many times I've blackened out in class for a few seconds but once I get home I am not tried. But at home I borrow notes an read over presentations made by the lecturers on the colleges computers which I can go in and take freely. Most of the time I don't attend lectures because I know once I get there I may fall asleep in class, being a general pain and being kicked out of the lecture to go home to sleep, but I can't sleep. The last time I slept good was yesterday for 10 hours and this was seriously bad timing, before that was early Monday morning, meaning I missed my 11AM class.

I had to hand up an essay yesterday to one of my lecturers and by a miracle I got to class. A few times for a few seconds I drifted off but luckily my friend beside me woke me up anytime it happened. At the end of the lecture, each of us were asking to got to the front, sign our name and leave our essay on the desk. I went up surrounded by the class, dropped the essay in and signed my name. I was happy as I headed to the door cause I think its a pretty good essay.

BUT my lecturer stopped me from leaving and in full view of the class asked me why he hadn't seen me in weeks, why I hadn't been attending lectures and why should he correct my essay in the first place seeing as he never saw me.

I completely froze I couldn't tell him not with the entire class watching me so I said "I don't want to talk about that here" hoping he would wait until everyone had left and then I'd explain what was happening with me. BUT instead he said to be at another lecture at 5 later that day and then we would talk. That was 6 hours away so I headed back to my place.

The last thing I remember is walking through my front door, I woke up at 10PM on my bedroom floor still in my clothes and my rucksack on my back. I couldn't believe it, I'd missed my chance to explain. I asked my house-mates what happened and they said I walked up to my room without a word to anybody, closed my bedroom door and passed out. They knew I'd trouble sleeping so thought it was best to leave me be.

After that I checked my student e-mail and saw that I have to go to a consultation hour on Tuesday. I'm bricking it of course. It sounds like a crap reason to miss the meeting "oh I fell asleep even though I haven't slept in weeks, that's why you haven't seen me." Just fantastic.

What am I suppose to do? I've told my house-mates that if I'm asleep Tuesday they have to wake me up but even still.... this whole thing sounds crazy but I need a passing grade on this essay for my CA's and if I don't pass I'll have a danger of having to do a written paper during the summer.

WHAT CAN I DO?? I WANT TO PASS THIS CLASS!!

    Go to a doctor immediately.
You may have a medical condition, which I do not think we are meant to advise about here.

I think you need to talk to a doctor and get the docotr to explain to you and your course director what is wrong.

Suggestions, eat, get plenty of fluids, get exercise, try to form some sort of time discipline. In class, sit up front, be cold rather than hot.

Dopey leaving this till Friday! You should have gone to the School nurse at least at some point this week, you're blacking out. Sleep walking and everything else? You should see a doctor asap.

Thats bull****. Youre fine Academically. You appear to have a medical condition and you should speak with somebody about it quickly. The lecturer is just being an ass and doesnt know it. Lots of lecturers can be asses at the start of the year; weeding out the people that shouldnt be there. If youre trying though thats another story. Just Know, that he has you pegged wrong, and when you clear this up on tuesday, he should be bashful.

Immediately begin a Sleep Journal and catolog when you've blacked out and for how long and when youve gone to sleep and when youve woken up, etc etc.

Get back on a Regular Sleeping schedule. You need to treat this as a medical condition and so you really shouldnt be doing anything this weekend other than resting up. Try and stay off electronics and away from alcohol. Be in bed by 9 or 10 each night.
