The 2 ticket machines in Shankill have been removed recently. Does anyone know why? I really doubt it was vandalism because I have never seen them out of order and the station always seems to be manned.

    I've not used Shankill.

    It could be:

    They were attacked.
They were in an exposed location and were removed to prevent them being attacked.
They were removed to infill for TVMs attacked somewhere else.
They are being upgraded - there is some ongoing work.

It is somewhat ironic that Railusers Ireland has the cheek to comment on the thefts/vandalism problems with ATVM s since they are campaigning for a scorched earth rail system with NO staff and station buildings no better than bus shelters.

    Open platforms basically?

Needs to be done but can never see it being the norm here. Was in Frankfurt recently and everything is open platform but you're fecked if caught without a ticket. They have loads of inspectors too, something about unemployed people are trained to do it and paid a basic wage to help them iirc

'Open stations' need not mean stations devoid of passenger facilities. Remove ALL the ridiculous new ticket barriers and take on a massive number of well trained, polite, and motivated revenue protection staff and the railway could be saved. In my lifetime as a railway enthusiast I have lost track (sorry) of the number of different ticket machines, turnstiles etc that CIE have introduced - none of them working very well or lasting very long. How on earth did the Victorian railway operators manage to handle large numbers of passengers without banks of ticket barriers????

I've never understood their obsession with barriers in stations.

France happily manages their mailine rail without ticket barriers - no going to Gare de l'Est, queuing to have your ticket checked and then joining a cold queue for the train.

Germany happily goes barrier-free for mainline and urban.

What's the point in having a barrier in Heuston and then having your ticket checked before the first stop ?

Solution seems to be plenty of _reliable_ ticket machines (if you read boards it seems that on a given day half of the machines are out of order thus preventing someone buying a ticket,,), plenty of ticket checking staff and no barriers.

Thats interesting. I though they were advocating ticket machines and staff you could actually see and interact with, not someone hidden in the back office. That on every journey a passenger should interact with at least one staff member.

    It could be:
    1. They were attacked.
    2. They were in an exposed location and were removed to prevent them being attacked.
    3. They were removed to infill for TVMs attacked somewhere else.

    1. Nope
    2. Nope
    3. Possibly
    4. Possibly(although, why take both machines at once?)
