    5 door, new tyres
    105,000 miles on the clock
    €4300 asking price

Thats all the info I have at present.would i be better off waiting till the new year to buy a car? What should I look out for, when I go to view the car.I dont know anything about cars, so any help would be very much appreciated.

I think at this stage you should wait until the new year and have a look again towards the of January 2010.

Thaks, what would be a good price for a car like this.on carzone there askin for between 4 -6 grand.

Basically, it will need a second timing belt change soon (4 years or 60k), the 1.4 is known to have problems with oil leaks (read expensive) and the gearbox bearings are made of what can only be described as something just very slightly sturdier than butter (again expensive). The car could be fine though but these are all things to watch given the mileage (not to mention people will be put off when you want to get rid).

I'd be thinking closer to the 3k mark. It is coming up to 8 years old too. Golf asking prices are in dreamland at the best of times

    +1

OP - you could buy a much better '02 car than a 1.4 Golf for less money and with lower mileage.

I would not go near any high mileage 1.4 Golf, far too risky. 1.6 is a better bet.

    1.6 focus...

The 1.6 golfs have gearbox issues also, although the older 8v is reliable. Think the 16v is too and 2002 on should be 16v. I don't know if the diesels have gearbox issues to the same extent. I was in a gearbox place last week and it was full of VAG petrols...
