Hmmm, tempting, but I think I'll have to pass. Don't fancy getting a divorce! ;)

IM training can be done on less than 10 hours a week. It doesn't require huge amounts of time necessarily.

On only 10 hours I'd say it would be a long day. I guess it depends on if you want to "complete" it or give it a good crack and do the best you can on the day.

Personally, if/when I do an IM I would like to give it a good go and put in the necessary training.

Do you think it's necessary to have done a marathon before doing an IM?

no. the marathon in an IM is a very different beast to a straight marathon in any case.

That's interesting - can you elaborate a little? Is it just that it's a harder task, or more of a run-walk thing or are you referring to the mental issues ...

yes, I guess it feels more like an ultra marathon than a marathon:rolleyes:
I would have thought having done few marathons would help, at least mentally, as you know that it is going to hurt A LOT!

    Look at this...Sian Welch & Wendy Ingraham - The Crawl - 1997

the crawl was a nutritional think. IIRC, they tried to do IM on a couple of sips of water. It's very rare to see anyone in that state today. The differences are many but include
    - gait; after 4-8 hours on the bike with the wheels going round and round you suddenly have to run, the IM shuffle is a strange looking beast
    - fuel; for a marathon you're fresh and you can push the fuel source, absolutely it's mostly aerobic but not exclusively, for an IM, you're already thrashed) I doubt there is anyone with significant anaerobic components to their IM run
-course; Im runs are generally flat (good for calorie expendure, not great for quads) lots of laps and well supported (depends on your frame of mind if yuo like this) and aid stations every mile (bless sometimes but the temptation is to eat at every one)

There is a certain logic in comparing IM runs to ultramarathons but it doesn't really feel the same. In an UM you're doing the same thing for hours, in a IM you're doing different things. Doesn't sound like a huge mental challenge but when you're tired changing focus 3 times can be difficult.

I'm sure I'll think of more difference later.
