Manually manage music on iPhone

Sorry - this is a basic question but I cannot get this to bloody well work. Just moved my iphone to my new mac.

I can automatically sync it to iTunes but I cannot get it to allow me to manually manage the music.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535

The instructions above say click 'manually manage music' in the summary tab of the device. But there is no such option :(

    There are only two:
Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected
Sync only checked songs and videos

What am I doing wrong here? This is NOT fuppin intuitive and it doesn't 'just work'.

Which version of iTunes are you using?

The option should be there - this is what the tab looks like in most cases:

One thing to note is that if you have synced music with another library, the manually manage option is greyed out (or rather off-white against the background) and could be a bit hard to spot. Unfortunately, setting up the iPhone to manually manage music does not allow you to sync music with more than one libraries, that's a bit more complicated...
