Buying a tiny piece of land with tree on it...

This may seem like a crazy plan but I would like to buy the land that a certain tree is located on in Co. Donegal. It's in a very marginal location and isn't near any power-lines, roads, houses or utilities that could eventually see the tree being felled. I know the land is private property but what I'd like to know is if there's a minimum amount of land that must be purchased to make the transfer legal? And what would be the process in securing that tiny plot?

Again, I know how this all sounds, but any practical advice will be appreciated!

It will probably make sense to buy (a) as far as a public road or at least have a right of way that can be enforced (b) the amount of land the tree is expected to take up in the future.

There is no minimum, but there are practical limits as to what can be defined.

I was just thinking it might make a nice gift to an American friend of mine who's distant relatives are from the area. I know it's corny but it might be something nice to give for Christmas!

My original gift idea and the one that'll exist after about 3.30pm today may be very different...!

If that tree is not available why not buy units in a forestry investment that is active in the area?

You wouldn't be able to point to a particular tree but you could say he owns part of that forest.

nice idea though not novel. I recall reading about an enterprising farmer selling plots of the auld sod to Irish-Americans years ago.
