    Hi folks.

My friend is buying a laptop for xmas.
It has to be cheap or as cheap as possible.. Only reall for browsing and a bit of word processing/filing.

What sort of memory etc should I look for?
Is dell the best place to go?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

windows does NOT come with Word

WordPad in Win7 is pretty good though.

It can open and save .docx (not .doc)

I ,ve seen pc world selling laptops 15inch screen,2gig ram,dvd rom, celeron cpu 2.oghz,350euro,thats about as cheap as it gets 4 a new laptop.WINXP os i think, could be windows 7 os ,im not sure.
I THINK the cheapest dell is around 450.
You can download abiword free program, reads ms word file format.

which is pretty pointless considering majority of people use .doc for compatibility purposes.

See here http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-30 .I,d go 4 the compaq 399 euro ,it has cardreader, HDMI AV out
EASY connect to hdtvs or lcd tvs.
Try abiword ,or notepad ,if you are a serious writer download Openoffice MS word compatible suite of programs.
I DONT recommend netbooks as the main pc,cos they dont have dvd/cd burners ,the screen is too small ,they are almost the same price as a full scale laptop.

Dell is fine if you have 550euros to spend.OR get the netbook above and plug it in thru vga into an external 15 or 19, 22 inch lcd monitor.22INCH LCDS widescreen with hdmi/vga in are 160euros approx.

Only if you intend sharing your documents. There are plenty of converters if a .doc had to be opened.

Doesn't take away the fact that it's a very decent word processor with support for the latest office file format.

Wordpad a fairly decent word processor

IT DOES NOT HAVE A SPELL CHECKER !

yes I used to use write from windows 3.1 as a word processor , but only because it had a spell checker add on , and because I wasn't interested n formatting

Are you sure you aren't getting it mixed up with the wordprocessor in WORKS ?

as for the docx converter, by the time you download all the patches for it it , you could have downloaded openoffice

and the docx format, talk about re-inventing the wheel
