Can anyone recommend an affordable mechanic in the general Lucan area?

Need to get my Opel Meriva 1.4 serviced and sounds like the timing belt is slipping too. Any ideas how much this might cost? :(

Might it have a chain instead of a belt?

More probably it's the fanbelt. Don't go to an Opel dealer whatever you do, they're a ripoff. Fanbelt replacement shouldn't be too much.

That's what I was thinking went to Opel dealer for service last year and couldn't believe the charges.

A neighbour of mine reckons it's the timing belt because it's making a similar noise toi his when his went a few months back.

If a timing belt slips, the engine components are not in time with each other and the engine will not run, or at least run erratically.
If you start the car and it starts to squeel when you increase the revs then it is the fan belt

Not the fan belt then, it's a rattling sound, not a squeal, and it sems to get more intense when I turn the wheels!

A meriva has electric power steering which consists of a motor attached to the steering column. The can make noise but it would only make noise when turning the steering, not when the car is stationary. Although it it wouldnt usually be a rattle as such. It does not have a power steering pump.

Other noises you may hear from the steering is a knock over bumps which you would feel through the steering wheel which is due to bushings in the steering rack although this is more of a problem with the corsa c model.

The only 1.4 engine the Meriva comes with is the Z14XEP engine which is chain driven, not belt so its not a timing belt although it could be the chain. Some of the 1.4's suffered with a problem with the chain streching causing a rattle. The rattle you describe, does it sound like its coming from the engine?

If it doesnt sound like its from the engine and isnt present when stationary, only when turning, another possiblity of a rattle could be a C.V. Joint although they dont usually give troube on the Meriva.

Post up some more info and I will try help some more. Also what year is the car?

EDIT Also another thing I thought of is a problem that was seen on a few pre '05 meriva's was a clicking while turning the steering which can be from the EPS unit which can sometimes be cured by greasing parts.
