I Won an auction for a used ds lite cost €45 with P&P so not bad but not ridiculously cheap so felt it was fairly safe !

at the end of auction I recieved this email

    hi,
thanks for your bid. id just like to tell you that my paypal on my account is wrong so dont send it to that one. please send the total payment of 46 euro to kevinmurray078@gmail.com

    - kevin09murray

Now I'm Not stupid I can smell a rat like anyone,
What I'm wondering is this guy just trying to circumvent ebay/paypal charges or is it an out and out scam! either way he's not getting a cent outta me

Since he sold through eBay, and will receive money through Paypal, he'll pay both fees. If the wrong Paypal account is assigned to eBay, he can just change it to the right one. If he can't or won't do that, then something is up.

If you send that payment, you'll not be covered at all, unless you can link it to the eBay sale. In Paypal, when you go to send money, you can enter an eBay item number. Whether it will let you do this with a different email address, I don't know, but you could go through the steps and see. If it won't let you, then tell him to shag off, and report it to eBay.

Thanx Jor-El. Figured it was a bit dodgy so reported it to ebay anyway as he's breaching their rules. not gonna go through with the transaction feck him if he complains I have the mail he sent requesting me to break ebay regs.

I agree with jor el, all the seller has to do is log into his ebay and change the email for his paypal, the way he's doing it sounds very dodgy.

I'd tell the seller you're only willing/comfortable to pay directly through the Ebay/Paypal link or else retract from sale.
If he's a genuine seller he'll understand and work with you

Did that and got this response :

oh jesus no, you've got it wring when i asked you to send it to kevinmurray078@gmail.com, that was my paypal. i was trying to say that the one on ebay is a typing error and i cant change it.
    regards,
    kevin

What do people think. I'm new to paypal so am not that familiar with it.
also the seller is relatively new to ebay and has 11 feedback 100% good all for similar items but all the feedback's are similarly worded.

    Should I risk it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭caprilicious

Personally I wouldn't, too many chancers out there.

Of course he can change it, all he needs to do is go into the settings on his profile and it allows you to change the email address.

100% up to you but as Jor El said, if you go ahead and send payment to an alternative email address you wont be covered & could lose the money.

Best of luck with it :)

You could do worse than post a link to the item you bought here and I would say one of us will give you a definitive answer as to whether or not it's a scam. :)

"this ds has a broken screen easily fixed its not cracked it just doesnt turn on. iv been told ot costs €40 to fix it. this ds is also half disconnected from the bottom, again easily fixed or glued"
    Not worth it IMO

He sounds dodgy i would stay away, also looks like he sold himself a few items

I'd steer clear of him. Am I reading the feedback correct in that 2 of his 4 positvies as a seller were left by kevin078murray09. His username is kevin09murray.

You have seen that "this ds has a broken screen easily fixed its not cracked it just doesnt turn on. iv been told ot costs €40 to fix it"?

46 inc postage plus 40 for a new screen plus "glueing" i bought a ds in game last year 2nd hand 100 plus a game,This is before dslite came out my advice ring game/gamestop they should have 2nd hand ds for 60 euro at the most considering there is the lite version.Plus you get some bit of a guarentee.Worth a call or 2 to them

Just sent this to the muppet

    Hi Kevin,
I'm sorry to say I believe that you are a Scammer! I've researched it and found out that a paypal account not linked to your ebay account is NOT SAFE! as you put it and that your email address is easily editible in ebay and/or paypal. Oh and buying your own Items and leaving feedback for yourself is a Really stupid thing to do. Do you really think that anyone with half a brain will fall for your ham-fisted attempt to scam. Happy Christmas I hope you choke on yer turkey ...Prick

Stranger again that kevin078murray09 bought two identical DS with games, I'd say he's shill bidding on his own auctions to raise the price, and managed to end up winning it twice himself.

Stay clear, this guy's a chancer.

One of the "advantages" to eBay of hiding the bidders names is that you can't spot shills till the auctions ended and only then when they are as stupid as this guy.

The less the punter can see the less he can complain to eBay about.

He has just soooooo much style

If he was that abusive then the nice thing to do would be to hit the
    Report an inappropriate email link.

Block I'd advise you not to use profanities in your mails on eBay - doesn't bode well for you if the seller chooses to report your messages.

You could have reported him for abusive messages there as well, however he'll just state that you used expletives first and you'll get a warning yourself.

Shill bidding is monitored on ebay and action does be taken on sellers who do it.

Block you're right to stay clear of this lad anyway - something up with it.

I've never know eBay take any action even when presented with evidence of shill bidding. If they did htf can scammers build up their feedback by selling penny items to ID's they also own, it would be a little more than coincidence when you see 20 or more ID's buying items from a seller when all the accounts including the sellers were created on the same day? How difficult is it to monitor the if the IP address bidding on item is the same IP address used to list the item and if the seller and buyer ID's were created on the same day.

EBAY MONITOR NOTHING except the money they make.

If the email came through the eBay system then the link is at the bottom of the page.

Well I can tell you for a fact action is taken. Sometimes it takes a little more than a simple IP address to prove shill bidding.

Also, not all action that is taken on a seller/buyer is visible, selling restrictions for example.

If eBays system can't spot sellers and buyers with the same IP address that also have accounts created on the same day then I can hardly see how they will spot anything that is slightly less obvious.

Take the evidence I once pieced togther for against an online tool seller. On his listings was a link to his business website and on that were links to other business he ran. Whenever I bid on one of his items a shill bid would switfly appear from another bidder who interestingly had the name of one of the other business's the guy ran, what did eBay say? "Sorry that proves nothing" I asked if they could check IP addresses and was told they didn't have access to that information.

I find it unbelievable how much broken DS go for on ebay. Like this went for €45 inc postage which is a common enough price for them to go for. To me it sounds like its broken in half

So buying the stuff directly from Dealextreme your going to need to buy:

    A case - €10
A top screen, wireless antenna and microphone - €10
    a charger - €5

    So your now at €70

To do the repair you need the proper screw drivers and a soldering iron.

If you've never done it before its going to take prob between 2 and 4 hours from start to finish.

while you can buy a fully working second hand one for around €65-70 (example)

I have actually bought a working one before to break up for parts because it was working out cheaper than any broken ones that had the parts i needed on ebay (when you count the usable stuff i had left over)

I'm trying to provide evidence as best I can for eBays cover up system and you are saying trust me, well I trust you about as much as I trust eBay. The whole problem is eBay say trust us and then provide only spin to support that trust.

I'd also add the evidence of a well reported recent scam that took in a lot of gulible people which was reported very early on yet no action was taken by eBay untill hundreds of people had been scammed, well done eBay, you were monitoring that one weren't you along with the shill bidding that went on to create the sellers positive feedback that created a false sence of security for the gulible buyers.

I have a few custom eBay searches which I use once a day while searching for items I'm looking for and due to the nature of the items in the search they show up the some of the regular scams very easily. So if it takes me 60 seconds each day to spot any obvious scams and I can follow these scams till the auction ends (even when reported) I still can't believe eBay do anything actively themselves except maybe provide a few shills to say the do.

I'm not saying don't use eBay but use it knowing its still full of scammers and nothing is activley monitored by eBay, then you will be cautious enough not to get caught out.

They can, but often do not. There's a big thread here about a scammer that has been selling auction lists in the guise of actual products, and hundreds of people have been scammed by it. That seller has dozens of shill accounts, and even though the selling accounts keep getting banned, none of the shill accounts do, even though they are obvious shill accounts.

eBay does not, that I can see anyway, pro-actively remove scam accounts, or do anything to hinder the scammers at all.

I reprted our friend for shilling and get this response from ebay....
    Hello Paul,

Thank you for your email. I understand you suspect the seller
"kevin09murray" for possibly shill bidding on their nintendo ds (item
    110464798817).

Please take note that we take Shill Bidding very seriously and we
    investigated your report immediately.

When we investigate a case of shill bidding, we look at the information
you provided and compare it to our records of bidding patterns. We then
take any appropriate action against the involved accounts.

Sometimes, what appears to be Shill Bidding may actually be legitimate
bidding and, if we find there's not enough evidence of Shill Bidding, we
may not take action against any of the reported accounts. In many cases,
a bidder enters a maximum amount for a bid and the system then bids for
them until their maximum is reached. If you see you are automatically
been outbid, this is usually the reason: the system is bidding for the
    other member.

Please be aware that, for privacy reasons, we can't share details of
    another members account. ......
