Without even requesting it a Visa Debit Card arrived in the post for me today.

Handy, I suppose, as most online retailers don't accept Laser.

However I tried ordering something using google checkout and it wouldn't work.

Is this common for all visa debit cards?

You may need to "validate" it before it can be used. Check with your bank afaik some (may be all) cards need putting in a bank hole in the wall machine and the correct code punching in before they can be used.

Or am I imagining that

It's not working anywhere in fact.

Well its getting cold and if you have a car at least you can keep it to scrape the windscreen in the morning.

btw did they send you a PIN number in a separate delivery?

Most cards need to be used in a bank machine first to activate them, otherwise it won't work in a shop or online.

Are you sure you didn't request this Visa card somehow?

Banks that send them out without being requested tend toget into trouble about it. I'm not sure its even legal for them to do so?

    no, never requested it.

Don't think there's anything wrong with sending out a debit card to people, it's credit cards that would get them in trouble.

I think banklink/laser are standard for all AIB accounts and you no longer can get a banklink on its own.

Check the title of the thread ;)

VISA is a credit card, hence my comments.

When I got my Visa Debit with Ulster Bank, I had to first activate it by text/post/online banking. I chose online banking as it was instant.

I then had to use it in an ATM, just to activate the PIN. I just put it into an ATM, typed my PIN and checked my balance.

It then worked perfectly for me. As a matter of interest, does it say 'Debitcard' or 'Servicecard' on the card itself?

Sorry I had no idea Visa did anything other than a credit card.

i have one.. love it- works at all online retailers and in shops.; funny enough most shops (tesco/supervalu) aren't used to DEBIT cards and keep trying to refuse me cash back on it- but its the same as a laser- it comes out of your own bank account and you are entitled to cash back on it. i keep telling them...t hey get the manager, and i get cash back if i need it.... they are so new here! and all current accounts that are eligible get one automatically- they updated their systems since they do everything a laser card does and more...
