nothing wrong at all, im a blanch man myself but i deffo cant include myself in the excellent shot phraternity. . . haha.
im new to the shooting to be honest, got into it this year through training my little springer. have managed to pop some tastey rabbits but finding it difficult to bag a pheasant. just wondered if the driven shoot might home in my skills a bit, as you cant eat clays when you hit them. hahaha
even the dog is getting a bit frustrated with me at this stage. . .
im sure shes thinking 'whats the ****ing point in finding them if your going to keep missing them' hahaha

Driven pheasant shooting is a totally different ballgame to rough shooting. The birds are flying over you as opposed to flying away from you. You'ld be better off practicing on clays, mounting the gun and firing at a fast quartering bird thats going away from you.

thanks, have done a small bit of this with the clays, averaging 75% at the minute. i suppose im just going to have to be paitent and practice a bit more, ive been told im stopping the gun and not flowing with the target, something im trying to work on.

yeah deffo coollattin in wicklow ive been beating der for the last 7 r 8yrs now havent got to go this year tho..ive shot there every yr that i was beating and it wouldnt be the best for practising unless ya have a bit of cashh to throw around haha..keep tryin at the rough shooting nothin better than shooting your first pheasant over your own dog

Stopping the gun is often caused by looking back at the bead to check the gun is on the target. Force yourself to keep looking at the target and you'll get the hang of it.

the dog works fantastic, shes only a year and a half old. works very hard for me, shes a little too eager at times but nothing i can really complain about, anyway the problem is deffo me, managed to miss yet another fine bird. this one was just short of sitting on the end of my gun. hahaha:(

Thinking of organising a shoot for next year as this thread has not been updated in a long time can anyone give me their experiences on shoots in recent years.

My experience is that a lot of them have ceased in the last 6/7 years. I used to work my dogs at the Derrinsallow shoot outside Birr, as far as I know that one is still going. I myself may try and get involved in a small syndicate in the coming years so I'll be following this thread to see what's still out there.

Talks of the shoot here in abbeyleix reopening but the current estate owner has 90% of the land rented on a 10 year grazing lease.supposed clause in this is that a shoot can come on to the land but has to be leased for minimum of 5 years.can't see how its going to be financially viable with costs of getting crops down, repair and maintenance of pens, birds, feed and emergency float etc etc
