Hey I have a friend who is 19/male and wants to get insured on a 1ltr Starlet.
Best quote I can find online is €2,750
Does anyone have any advice on where to look. I know he is young but that still seems like a lot of money to insure a starlet.
Only looking for 3rd party cover btw.

Get out the Phone book/Golden Pages
Phone them all the insurnce companies and brokers.

I assume the car is quite old as the 1 litre Starlet was phased out quite a while ago (1993?) - an old car like this could increase the insurance premium even further as it is seen as a higher risk compared to something with more modern safety features (and less rust).

Also ring the insurers as you may get better deals than the online quotes. Watch out that some insurers may seem very cheap but have very high excess payments.

Try quinn direct they seem to be the cheapest for young drivers. I paid 2400euro for my first years insurance on a punto 3 years ago when i was 18:mad:

I got my insurance for 380 on the hibernian deal. Not sure exactly how it works because my mam sorted it out. Maybe look into it.

Sounds like you were just added to her insurance as a named driver?

Mistake in my first post he is actually 18. Yes it's an old starlet 1992. Quinn have quoted him €3k. I don't see how anyone this age could afford that unless their parents are well off. He is working so could probably afford up to €2k but I have yet to find a quote close to that. Are there any posters around the same age on here, how much are you paying?

I'm going to guess he doesn't have a license? Tell him to pass the test and then buy the car.

I know it sounds like alot but unfortunately it's generally that price for young males starting out. Just get out the golden pages and ring up all the companies, that way you can give them more exact details instead of drop-down boxes on a website.]I'm 17 and I pay 2,300 on a 1ltr Micra, 3rd party and my own policy. That was the best quote I got, some places quoted me 5,500 - 6,000

I tried on bestquote.ie and they want €3,950 for a 1ltr yaris third party
    Will try quinn later

Quinn want €2500 to insure a yaris. It does make sense a yaris would be a lot safer than a starlet. Still expensive.

just tell him to put one of his parents name on the car and they get the insurance with him as a named driver.. should be a good bit less than €2k that way

His parents already have policies on other cars.
Would he really be covered doing this?

Oh God we really are back to the 80s!Mind you it would have been more like a 23 year old not 19 in this situation back then ...

Being insured on one car doesnt mean you cant get insured on another.. well not as far as i know anyway

So lets say you were insured on a 08 Avensis and you then get insured on a 92 1ltr starlet and put your son down as named driver. How legit will this look?

well it is slightly bending the rules :D... but if they insure from a different company it might not look so bad.. its what id do if i started out now as young people dont have the money to pay for insurance on their own.. not saying this is what you should do but its a way to cut cost whic is what you are looking for.

Well maybe if I had some guarantee that he would be legitimatly covered this way. Could cause a lot of trouble if he did have to claim.

Sounds like he doesnt have a license either

Perhaps he should invest the money in Getting one via Lessons + named driver on Parents car.

Gone are the days of getting a provisional and driving !

Isn't that what nearly all young people do that can't afford to go out on their own insurance?

I was in the same scenario a few years ago but I ended up going on my own policy. Cost over double of what it would've cost if I were on a parents policy but 1 year on your own policy is more beneficial to you later on than 1 year named driver.

Although, correct me if I'm wrong, you can only be insured to drive 1 car at a time... as in, both cars can't be on the road at the same time, I think? You're the insured driver on both cars so you can't obviously drive 2 cars at the same time. Could cause an issue if you were proven to have both cars on the road and one of them gets in an accident!
