Claim Vat back on purchasing Mobile Phone

    Just wondering if I can claim the VAT back on purchasing a smart mobile phone??

    No not unless you are VAT registered.

    you also have to use it in the business that you are registered for.

    Once you have a valid VAT reciept (one that shows the vat element of the purchase) you can claim the VAT as a business expense. If the Reciept has your details on it- make sure they are the name and address of the company and not your personal details (unless sole trader and thats OK). Hope this helps.

    I have yet to register as a sole trader (waiting on putting a number of things in place) and will be operating under a business name. However I now want to upgrade my monthly bill pay plan.
    My question is can I use the phone account as a business account (without it technically being so) with regard to claiming VAT back*.
    *[I understand I cannot claim until such time as I have registered].

    If you are operating as a sole trader you can claim the VAT back on a mobile phone bill as long as the phone is wholly and exclusively for the business. It doesnt matter if the mobile phone company regard it as a 'personal' account.
