Background: I have a dell D830 laptop. Came home on friday and my kid (1.5years old) had pulled every key off the keyboard, broke a load of them. So i got a new laptop in work a D820, looks the same etc but obviously some parts are different. I decided to use the D820 instead of just replacing the keyboard on the D830 because its newer looking etc. So i swapped around my hardisk, 2x 2gbs memory etc into the D820 booted up Windows 7 on the hardisk it detected all the changes and installed the best drivers available. I then went off and got the correct graphics drivers nvdia omnicro 110 or something i think it is (writing this from memory) and all was good, except the resolution available on this new laptop only goes up to 1280x800. the D830 went up to 1600x something or other, higher anyways.

Heres is my question: is this resolution down to the laptops screen? (im being told it is by people in work) or the graphics card in this one compared to my D830.

If its the screen i will just removed the one off the D830 and put it on the D820 (which i can do no problems.) Do you guys think thats the issue the screen? will the screens work if i swap them around? any ideas?

    Cheers

Most likely the screen resolution of the new machine is just lower.

Go to System Information > Display and it should tell you the actual resolution of the display.

Cheers, i know the resolution is at its max on the d820 alright, my question is if i change the screen over from the d830 which had a higher resolution than 1280x800 will this allow me to increase the resolution. if i plug a monitor for example into the back, i can get a way higher resolution on it than i can on the laptop. so is it down to the screen on the d830 being better than the d820?

    Yes.

Assuming it fits and is compatible of course.
