Hi all. I'm 25 have never really driven before other than 1st and 2nd gear around a car park.

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of roughly how many lessons it would take to get me driving properly as I don't want to splash out on loads to find I only need a few lessons and would you apply for the test straight away?

    Thanks

Some people take to it quicker than others..

I will admit I'm a very slow learner and I've taken close to 10 or 12 - though I have a test next week.

Go out for a few lessons first, build up your confidence and then apply.

It's €75 down the drain if you apply based on the fact you might pass if you cram in a couple of lessons.

the driving school usually have a few deals on around xmas, 12 lessons for the price of 10 or stuff like that.
would be good to see what kinda of deals you can get.
i would suggest you start off at 10 and see how it goes.
ask them can you pay one by one... though would be better to do them all cos an instructor needs to spend time with you to find out what needs to be improved.

    Mr. Bargain Alerts! :)

Thanks for that. Will keep it in mind. Trying to get the family to buy lessons for me for Christmas but don't want to go overboard. Maybe go for around 5-6 and see how it goes.

I don't suppose you know of any good bargains on lessons going around Dublin 6?

Good point there it'd probably take the 5 or 6 to learn how to drive and the next 5 or 6 to iron out the cracks to prepare for the test at least.

Good luck. For me it took a good few, then some with my brother or dad in the car but then bit the bullet and got out there. Loving it now and hope to pass on Monday...it's really about practice, practice practice

I wanna buy some lessons for my wife but i heard since summer 2008 they changed the requirements, like when going for test they need 10 or 16 driving lessons under your belt from a registered instructor and all that stuff. Can anyone illuminate this for me please? Because she had 4 lessons with this guy we know and i would like to ask him again but no point if hes not a reg instr. etc

    Thanks,

    Brian.

Brian - nope there is no stipulation on minimum lessons but you do have to hold a learner permit for 6 months before taking the test (you can book within the 6 months though).

It is an offence for anyone who is not an Authorised Driving Instructor to accept payment for tuition in how to drive but you won't be asked to prove you had x lessons with an ADI as part of the test process (that is expected to come in over the next couple of years though).

If you are receiving lessons and paying for them with someone who is not an ADI my main concern would be whether their insurance is active while the lesson is going on (I believe probably not) so you should definitely check - I'm sure he won't mind.

You can also go to the RSA website and there is a list of those who are registered by county, which is updated daily.

To the OP - I think best value is likely to be booking 10 lessons or whatever deal is going for in or around that. You can use the first few to get going, and then get as much accompanied practice as you can, before using the last few as tuners for your test. You're likely to pick up the basic skills within the first couple of lessons and then its just practice practice practice.
