VW Polo v Fiesta

Im looking at a 2nd hand car and have a choice between a VW Polo and Fiesta.
The Polo is '00, 78,000 miles, NCT till July 2010 €2,200 1.0 Litre
Fiesta Ghia is '02, 91,000 miles NCT till Jan 2010 (but dealer said he would put it through NCT) €2,800 1.25 Litre
Both cars are in great nick, both silver...the engine doesn't sound great on Fiesta, but dealer said he would service it. The Polo is a private sale, it was brought from a garage 18 months ago and hardly ever used.
Any one any thoughts on which car would be best..im just looking for a little run around something that is reliable and wont cost too much.

    Cheers
    Vern

If the engine doesn't sound great in the fiesta look else where, there are plenty around. If it was a working fiesta or a polo i'd go for the fiesta. Nice cars and the 1.25 Zetec is surprisiongly nippy.

That Polo will be cripplingly slow, at least the Fiesta will have a bit of poke (relatively speaking of course) in it and is two years newer.

But the Polo will have a slightly nicer interior.

i have a 1.0L VW Polo and it is quite nippy for a 1.0L, and they are generally quite reliable, and IMO there nicer looking!

I got the same as that (00 1.0L VW Polo) earlier this year that was NCT'd until May 2010 (a year after I bought it). But had 47,000 miles on it with the timing belt replaced at 45,000.

I paid about €2,200 for that so try and get it down to at least €2,000, and enquire about service history (when timing belt was replaced etc)

I'd say go with the Polo.. but I'm biased as not a fan of the Fiesta.

I would go for the fiesta, if there was no problems with the engine of course. Really are more than realible. Ghia is the best of them but ensure you check it for rust along the sides underneath, it tends to be a problem on them. Don't know much about the polo. :D

Fiesta Ghia for me, the 1.25 litre engine is a gem in the Fiesta, it was co designed with Yamaha and has 75bhp, much better than the 1.0 litre with 55bhp in the Polo. The Ghia is also packed with lots of features only Polo owners can dream about such as air conditioning, cd player and alloy wheels.

On a side note about the engine sound from that Fiesta, get the car checked out by a good mechanic before buying. If could be something simple that the dealer can put right but if in any doubt then just walk away as there are plenty of these cars around.

I agree with everyone on here about the fiesta!

The Polo's as bland as a blender, and if I may say.. a lot more girler than the Ford. FORD FOR MEN!!!
Get a 1.25 zetec, a nice clean Ghia model with a sunroof. Best small car for the money I can think of.
I had one and put serious miles on it, never needed anything, and always well up for a long drive. If anything does go wrong, they're so easy to fix. I used to always drive from Dublin to Mayo in the thing, and sometimes do about about 1,000 miles a week in it. I actually travelled the entire country in mine, and miss it a lot.

Awesome wee car, and you won't get the smile factor the Fiesta gives you with the Polo. You really would be amazed the things you can do with that little car on the right road. They feel much bigger than what they are, and have amazing driving dynamics! FIESTA all the way!

I can only imagine how much fun the 1.6 zetec S would be... :o

Im getting a mechanic to check the fiesta today, see what he says...
Just got a text to say that I can have the polo for €2000..

Wouldn't bother with the Polo, that 1 litre engine is about as miserable as engines get, you'll get beaten by scooters. The gearbox was shyte in those and the interior is about as miserable as any German car ever.
Go for the Fiesta, but a working one! And a 1.25 engine, not the crappy 1.3.

Yeah agree with most people on here, I have owned a MKIV Fiesta for nearly 10 years, and it is as sweet now as the day i bought it, she has 106k on the clock, been back and forth to UK many times, up and down motorways, which it will cruise comfortably at 80mph all day long, I have the 1.25 Ghia and as said earlier it is miles better than the 1.3

Dont know about the Polo, as i am not a fan of VWs, and the handling on the Fiesta will be better.:)
