seriously thinking about buying this car:
    http://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=465588&r=s.php?m=94&o=846&r=2007&g=0

is there any issues I should be aware off?

It's only an S model in Flat Red. Those 2 things alone are enough to make me run a mile.

If you ever want to sell the car on in the future it needs to be SE spec with the full leather.

1.6d isn't too bad in a car that size. Can feel a bit underpowered depending on what you are used to. Usually no major issues with the S40 either.

This would be a much better buy

CD Player, Electric Windows, ABS Brakes, Alloy Wheels, Fog Lamps, Multiple Air Bags are not "lots of extras". That's standard.
1.6 is a bit small for such a heavy car. Go 1.8 or even 2.
    Here

Btw, stay away from red. In 10 years time it'll look like crap.

Great value in these cars second hand howerver I'd agree with the other comments that you should go for the SE model with full leather interior. Leather interior was standard on Irish SE models but was an optional extra on UK models.

    Something like this:

I have a 1.6d S40 SE and to be honest the 1.6d is sluggish enough especially from take off. It does however give very good fuel economy but given the choice again though I would definately opt for the 2.0d instead.

Ownership experience: I have mine about 8 months now and I generally happy with it. Things to watch out for are the electrics as they can cause little nigly issues. Eg my driver's door central locking a few times decided it didn't want to open from the inside, I also got a false warning for a rear fog light blown bulb. Other well known problems include the ABS control unit which is very expensive to replace. Servicing and parts are also very expensive especially at Volvo dealerships so just be aware of this before .

Some good information from the owner's club: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/

thanks for the advice guys. just wondering would i be better off going to the UK or have prices fallen so much here that i'm unlikely to make enough of a saving to justify the effort

A relation was considering an S40 1.6D recently, but opted for a Civic 2.2 i-CTDi instead.

It's not exactly a big car. As has been repeated so many times at this stage, it's pretty much a Focus.

The S40 is a far better used buy.

The S40 like most Volvos suffer from heavy depreciation so used ones represent great value. Unless you are buying nearly new I reckon you will get one here for similar money as in the UK. As already mentioned the S40 actually has a better standard spec here than in the UK so check prices out here before looking across the Irish Sea. Forget the S model, minimum you should be looking at is the SE, the SE LUX has all the trimmings but is rare enough here and any I saw were all 2.0d rather than 1.6d.

I've been told 150k miles but ring a dealer to be certain.

Citroen quote 10 years or 150000 miles for that engine in the Berlingo.

But as bazz says contact your dealer (or read the manual)
