Thinking of going there for a week early in the NY to hopefully get some miles in with some sun and less rain on my weather-beaten face - aiming to get 2010 off to a better start than the end to this Godforsaken one!

Anyone done it before, thinking of doing it; advice as to do's/don'ts, weather, accommodation etc? Or would someone have another (affordable) location they'd recommend?

    Cheers in advance...

hi, been going to lanzarote in january for the last few years, got a few young kids so not much time for cycling, but cycling friendly island with plenty of good surfaced quiet roads.ryanair fly there now so much cheaper than before, at least 2 bike shops that rent out decent road bikes or just bring your own, accom is cheap as chips in jan.
pm me if you need any more info

Im heading down there for a triathlon training camp in February, seems that cycling is quite big over there. Carbon Canondale bikes to rent for 85eur per week too, which aint bad, not sure if you have to be staying at club La Santa to get that though.
Ive been told theres lots of lovely scenic rides. Ironman is held there, so will be sure to do the Ironman bike course for kicks

Mel and I went to Gran Canaria last year for 3 weeks in Januarys (wearing shorts for the 3 weeks) and will be heading back there again in January this coming year.

We stayed in Vecindario - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=vecindario,+GC&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=43.578243,91.933594&ie=UTF8&cd=1&hq=vecindario,+GC&hnear=&radius=15000&z=12

We both had to work full time there so it was easiest to get to various routes up into the hills and was not a tourist trap (normal GC town).

We highly recommend some winter sun if possible.

A few things I wrote about it last year: http://ryansherlock.blogspot.com/search/label/gran%20canaria

    BBTB,

Heading over to the canaries myself in Jan and was thinking the same, what I need is a cycle hire shop that hire out road bikes .

"Renner bikes" in Puerto del Carmen are supposed to be the business,I hope to head over about the 16th Jan

we go Puerto del Carmen and i all ways hire a bike,as has been said ryanair are flying their now so keep a look out for cheap fights we have been using aer lingus and if you keep an eye on their site you can get a good deal or watch out for a cheap package

as for accommodation at first we used the 3/4 star hotel they are all much the same and work well as a base ,we now book a house just up the hill from the old town which is much better if you want wash a bit of gear and have a bit of space to work on the bike and if you dont want to do the tourist thing you can have a nice night in

now as a recreational cyclist lanzo is a hilly spot but the roads are grate and if you want you can stay by the coast where the cycle lanes run up the back of the airport down to the capital but its well worth heading up the mountains you will be flying when you get back

http://www.mountainbike-lanzarote.com/index_eng.html i have used them top men
