10.6.2 slowing down system

I recently upgraded OSX to 10.6.2 and since then things have ground to a halt. I just checked and it took me 21 seconds to open the System Preferences on a 13" MacBook Pro with nothing else running.

It seems to be a disk issue as my disk reads/write randomly go off the radar when doing anything (photoshop/lightroom). I've repaired the disk permissions and verified the disk but it hasn't done much to help. Has anyone else experienced this and if so is there a solution.

I have time machine running which seems to bring on a lot of the problems. I really don't want to have to clean install already, I've only had the thing a month or two and was relying on time machine to avoid just this problem

Spotlight isn't reindexing, is it? Click on it in the corner to check. If it gets interrupted it can end up reindexing forever.

Otherwise, open Activity Monitor and keep an eye on the active CPU processes. You might have a hidden b.g. app that doesn't like the new OS.

If you think TM is the problem, try turning it off for a while and see if the issue goes away.

I've noticed that the boot up time on my MBP is taking much longer than it did when I first installed Snow Leopard. It now takes a couple of minutes as oppose to a few seconds.

    i'm in the same boat,,
seems to have gotten worse even since installing snow leopard full stop!
a lot of the problem seems to be that there is near constant searching going on in the disk where running any programs.
    Time Machine is turned off.
Was initially afraid it was the beginning of hard drive failure (everything backed up btw). but its been like that for a while so seems more like the OS is is doing something in the background. searched the net but unable to find anything definitive on it.

Spotlight indexing? Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right corner to check.

If it is then the index file has probably been corrupted, do the following:

Open System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy. Click on the "+" button on the bottom and add your hdd to the privacy panel. Then close system preferences.

Then reopen them, go back to the privacy panel and use the "-" button to remove your hdd. Spotlight will now reindex again. It may take a while, leave it to finish.

If you have a TM drive, you may need to add/remove it to the privacy panel, as above, as well.

I did a complete update of all my Adobe products which seems to have sorted it (fingers crossed). I'm going to keep an eye on it anyway, and check spotlight all the same

Looking at mine, which I've noticed slowing, it seems to be firefox is taking up most of the processing!!!

I was noticing a complete slow down when stitching panoramas together in lightroom/photoshop. Had a look at the panorama TIFF files i was creating....850Mb a piece! So the Macbook was actually handling them quite well all things considered.

For some reason broswers now gobble up exponential memory if you leave them running, safari can get up to 600-700Mb of ram allocated if left open for a few days without closing down

Have to get into habit of shutting down browser daily and restarting

There seem to be multiple issues with this OS version now
