what wage can i expect

I left college a year ago with an honors in business management and like allot of my friends i found it hard to get a job in business field.

so i went for a position in sales and marketing, its a work experience program for 6 months with a view to be taken on in the business at the end. its better experience than unemployment and it definitely prevents me from loosing my edge (employability)
im good at my job and i think i will be taken on.

the business is a SME and about 30 people working there. it is in the IT sector and has ticked over ok through the recession.

i have seen else where that with-OUT a degree you can expect 18500 and with as a marketing assistant you could expect 27000 (2008).

heres the big question - what can i expect? i have a degree and i am doing a good job?

and if they offer 18000 should i take it and say nothing? there is no provision for commission on sales as im doing reactive selling.

Is this sterling we're talking about?

If it's euros then I couldn't even afford to live on €18k! But it all depends on you, do you want to work for this kind of money or be unemployed?

If i was you I'd just take it for the sake of getting a bit of work experience, you can always leave if something better comes along

If they offer i'd ask them when would they expect me to secure a commission based post. 18k would be basic for a sales job, you'd want to be earning at lest another 30k in commission. There's no shortage of sales jobs, you've got some of the skills, don't sell yourself short.
If you take a sales job with a larger outfit you'll probably get a lot better training and better perks, don't forget we've got the likes of Dell, HP, Microsoft in this country and there nearly always looking for reps.

Definitely take the job if you're offered it. You can always keep looking for a job on the side of you're not happy with the salary. At this stage of your career you need to gain as much experience as you can so being on the dole isn't going to help you in that regard.

You don't know what they are going to offer you yet and you are basing your 18k to 27k on something you've seen elsewhere!

Wait until they offer you the job and report back here with the package for advice

Until then, we are only guessing.

Out selling, good sales rep will always make money, recession or no recession.

18k is rubbish for a sales job.

I'm not in sales but my experience has been a little different. I have worked for both IBM and Intel and more recently with a small Irish company. I spent numerous hours in fairly remedial training courses in both IBM and Intel either learning very little or learning a skill that was absolutely useless outside of that particular company. (e.g. I had to complete a ladder safety course in Intel.....I am a full time wheelchair user!! )

I also found the work eithic in the larger companies to be quite poor. On the other hand, the company I now work for has about 30 employees and I'm constantly learning new skills, the work ethic is excellent and as a result I'm motivated to study in my spare time. I did less work for more money in the big companies but I absolutely dreaded going to work. Now I earn less, work more and I absolutely love it.....

I agree, but a good sales rep can't sell anything without a job, and there aren't that many about! Certainly not as many as you make out. Especially seeing as the OP doesn't really have any experience.

Plus the OP says the sales are reactive rather than proactive which would never have the same commission structure like you would have being a rep.

I agree though, 18k is terrible for ANY job past your teens.

Sales won't send you on bull**** courses, you've one job to do, sell. If the course helps your selling you'll be on it.
If I was busy selling and someone asked me to do a ladder saftey course i'd probably rap it around them.

Your last point makes me think your half cracked, but I know what you mean, when i finally break free of work i'm going to work my ass for on my glass bottom boat for half nothing only the joy of it.

yea doing it for xp right now, but i really like working there,

i would like to move away from the sales wage on your comments though because there is one main sales guy who dose all the onsite calls and new big business, im just there to take the over flow of randomers who just want computers ect....

so if i was doing just marketing what kinda wage should i expect?

it depends on what kind of marketing & what kind of experince you have? That can also be comission based, i.e a bonus on your wages if sales makes it's target, the 2 are very closely linked, if the marketing guys are no good the sales guys will be looking to have their heads on a stick.

Ask the questions to the randomers that pass you, the big sales guy got their because he know what questions to ask. Is the computer for home or business? Straight away you've potentially tuned a 1 computer sale into a business opportunity.

What turned you off the sales and made you want to do marketing? Do you think it would be easier?
