Hearing all these traffic horror stories I have to say sitting in traffic is really my idea of hell. What time would you need to be leaving Dublin to avoid most of the snarlups and get parking. Thinking of the train option as my shopping wont be bulky stuff, is that handy regarding proximity to shops when you get off at the station and the standard of train service to Newry??

If you do take the train, the station is outside town.but there is a feeder bus(free I think) that will drop you at the bus station, which is right next to the Buttercrane and the Quays.Worth it this time of year if you're not bringing back booze or anything bulky.

A new 16 Million pound Train Station opened last week in Newry, got to be the way forward. Let you have a wee drink too!

if you are going to get the train to newry, you might as well just get it to belfast. only an hour extra on the train, 20euro return from connolly and there is victoris square and castlecourt to shop in. a LOT better for christmas shopping, but for food shopping, not so good

I would drive. Bringing bags and bags of shopping onto a train that is ALWAYS full or nearly full is going to be stressful for you and is a bit ignorant to your fellow passengers.

I'd get the train. The last thing Newry needs is *another* car to add to the huge queue. If you aren't going to be buying loads, the train makes better sense. The traffic around Newry can be unbelievably awful!

It depends why you're going really. For me, shopping in NI is about getting a big grocery shop done and then looking around the other stores. And you need a car for that. I would typically shop in the Banbridge Outlet first and then head on to Sprucefield, and maybe to Belfast if there was something I was looking for (getting into Belfast to park at Castlecourt is a dream since they opened the flyunders). With a car you can always go back and leave stuff you've already bought in the boot which won't be an option if you are on public transport, and as already said you have to be mindful that the train station in Newry is not beside the Quays and Buttercrane so you will have to wait for a feeder bus each way too.

taxis from train to shops in newry are fairly cheap.
