LAG issue?

I've noticed a possible problem over the past day or two that is starting to really annoy me. I've never played an online shooter before MW2, so I'm obviously only 2 weeks into the experience. As such, I realise I'm a total noob, so this could be a silly question. Or maybe not.

Basically, in a scenario where myself and Player X randomly enter into a room, or area together. I get maybe 5-8 shots away but don't hit, then they shoot at me and I'm dead. Okay, I'm thinking, my aim from hip shooting must have been off. This has happened with both a SCAR and an AA-12 shotgun. However, when I watch Kill Cam back, it shows me as not having shot at all, or else maybe just once before getting kia.

So what gives? Am I suffering a LAG issue where broadband issues mean that my shots aren't registered quickly enough and I'm at a serious disadvantage? Or is it just a limitation with the kill cam and it isn't perfect science? If it's the latter, then I'll know not to get annoyed in future. If it is the first one, then I'm going to have to seriously look at upgrading my broadband as it will seriously dent my enjoyment of the game.

I'm with Digiweb and have a 5MB package. However, it is wireless and sometimes goes quite slow. I suspect the contention ratio might have something to do with this.

Any help would be great. I've put this as a 360 call, but perhaps it is a cross platform issue.

It Happens when you don't react quick enough and fail to shoot the other dude, you think you reacted quicked but you didn't, he reacted first, and when you see it from his view, it looks blatantly wrong.

Happens to me aswell, and my latency and speed is pretty good, not a connection error i don't believe.

Just actually got reminded of something there when chatting to a mate.

After reading some stuff on here yesterday, I switched my perks around. The tip was to not use Stopping Power because it gave you a false damage baseline if you ever moved off it. So I changed Stopping power to Hardline (in advance of Cold Blooded) and also changed from Steady Aim to Scrambler (in advance of Ninja).

I'm now guessing that those two changes are what made the big difference to my gaming yesterday. I certainly felt like I was getting 5-6 shotgun rounds off with the AA12, but perhaps because they inflicted less damage maybe that was why I got killed. The day before, I would not have.

i dunno, from what i've noticed, shotgun is normally one hit kill if you're near enough to them.

But yeah, i reckon stopping power is good if your using a Sniper rifle or a gun with horrible recoil, otherwise the more practice the better you'll get!!

A good ping in MW2 is around 150 miliseconds. So between users you have a .3 second lag at best and host machine lag as well. Nothing you can do to change this besides dedicated servers.

ye see that all the time but last night i fired a shotgun point blank with a comformed hit and it didn't kill him, the hit landed on the kill cam so most of my shot missed some how at such a close range.

just to say it was double 1887s with fmj with extra damage and steady aim

As far as i know, fmj doesnt inflict more damage on people, just lets you shoot through thicker surfaces.

I meant to quote the guy before you, sorry.

Fmj is an "attachment" for weapons that lets you penetrate surfaces more Deeply????, dunno if that'd be the right word for the circumstances, but yeah, basically.

This is why fast paced games need dedicated servers. This kind of thing was normal years ago when people used to play pc fps games on 56k modems.

OP yes this is lag. Basically the player who killed you and that scenario probably had a faster ping time than you so you guys are slightly out of synch. The game seems to be coded to hide some level of this. Thing is it probably works for you as often as against you as you don't see the replay when you kill the other guy. It annoys me but when i remember it blances out i live with it. if you notice this happening on a given map you can adjust your play a bit to compensate (i.e. play a bit more cautiously)

This is also why there is some 'host advantage' the host by definition having no delay.

I think some people use lag switches. was playing a game last night, one player would be able to shoot at you from a distance, with no lag, but the minute you got close to him he would start lagging, dissappear then re-appear and knife you. Nearly put my fist through my monitor:mad:

Spot on man, i have often got 2-3 shots off with my shotgun and then been killed only to look at the kill cam and find out i haden't even lifted the gun!!!

Cheers for the replies guys. That youtube link explains it a bit, and at least now I know that I'm not alone.

Somone above mentions that 150ms is a good ping in MW2. When I'm going in the lobby and the 360 is going through the motions of looking for a game to join me to, it has 50ms about 95% of the time, with very occasional dip to 100ms. It normally bounces back to 50ms before the actual game starts though.

Am I right in thinking from what's been said, that the host plays some part in this issue? If so, is it a case where if you find it particularly bad in any game, you might be best to leave that group and go look for another match somewhere else?

I've noticed that quite a lot too, it can get quite annoying, can't see why people can't play fairly.

It also just seems like people can see through walls sometimes they have such a good shot when your not even visible, sucks sometimes.

heart beat sensor? I've tried shooting through walls sometimes when using this. Can't remember if I've hit yet though.

One thing about the HBS is that it doesn't take into account the vertical. So on levels like favela etc, you can have people 1 or 2 floors below you and they seem right beside.

Nah not HBS you can see in the killcam whether they're rocking that or not... i always have ninja pro on anyway, no matter which class!!

Yup I sometimes leave if its really bad. Otherwise I dial back the agression a bit
