looking for some advice on routes as haven't been cycling for over 10 years

can anyone recommend routes from Bray ( southern cross area) to Citywest for a work commute , want to try a day or 2 a week as a alternative to the car and take advantage of the cycle to work scheme etc

might try a dart /cycle combination but presume there are still restrictions on dart for bikes during rush hour

    Any suggested routes advice welcome

You can't bring a bike on the DART at any time of day, rush hour or not. Only option would be a folder or leaving a bike at the station.

Google Maps Walking directions are often good for this sort of thing.

There are nice routes along quiet rural roads but they are also very hilly.

Do not try that unless you are fit or have been cycling for a while .. sure fire way to a coronary or knee replacement surgery if this is your first time on a bike

Bray,Shankill, Kiltiernan, Lambs Cross, Grange Road, Taylors Lane onwards over M50 up to Bridget Bourkes (The Mill) around by Shamrock Rovers onto N81 and turn right at Jobestown Inn into City West that way.

When you are feeling up to it Glencullen up by Johnny Foxs', Cruagh Wood, Kilakee and into Tallaght that way, turn left after saw mills on decent.

Thats more of a training spin than a commute in my view... If you're coming off the southern cross, you could go up the bad bends road to Enniskerry and head in the road towards Lambs cross instead of the Bray/Shankill route which would be busier. I used to do this a couple of years ago and it was hard going day in day out. Lots of little kickers and drags along the way too... good luck with it.

I sometimes commute from Dalkey/Killiney to Citywest, but as I do it on a fixed geared bike I stay out of the mountains. Basically go through Sandyford business park and then along the side of M50, onto Grange road/Taylors lane over the M50 via Ballycullen rd and into Old Bawn then on to Citywest.

It might seem that I go all over the place but it is only 2,3 km longer then going over the mountains. The roads are both in good condition and not too heavy with traffic. Also if required there is a cyclepath most of the way.

For me the distance is 28K and takes around an hour. Sometimes over the summer I use my road bike and go home via the Kippure, Powerscourt Mountain and through Enniskerry.
