makes me mad when i walk into a shop here and in big letters as a selling point in the specs of a tv set "Freeview ready"

Freeview means it wont work in this country. People are still wasting their money on "Freeview" Tv's thinking they'll be ok for Irish DTT.

Harvey norman are one for this. Least tescos have signs up saying "Freeview not available in ROI"

    They're wrong though.
Freeview is already available in certain parts of Ireland-namely most of co wexford and the East coast south of Dublin and border areas close to NI and coastal parts of louth can get it from Wales and NW England.
Freeview works perfectly with me for instance on both a sony idtv [mpeg 4] and on my humax.

By NI dso, large parts of North and mid Leinster and connaught will be within reach.

But I agree -most tv shop assistants are clueless on irish dtt and mpeg4.

One in Harveys was visibly going sigh when I insisted on see'ing all the spec's recently to ensure mpeg4 before buying.

Tesco in Tramore have a far more misleading sign:

"Freeview not yet available in ROI"

It has the knack of being incorrect in almost every conceivable way!

This is what the Dept of Communications has to say on it:

    http://www.digitaltelevision.ie/National+DTT/Useful+Information.htm

"The RTÉNL DTT network uses the MPEG 4 compression standard and MHEG 5 (V6) middleware MPEG 4 is different to the MPEG 2 compression standard used in the UK. Retailers should note that televisions with MPEG 2 tuners only, will not pick up the Irish DTT service, when it develops. "

"Retailers are requested to ensure that all iDTV’s for sale in Ireland will be compatible with the Irish DTT network, when it launches. Retailers are also requested to provide information to their customers on DTT."

Not in rathmines or Leitrim they don't. They do have a UK sticker up. I did email one of the tesco people about having a sticker to cover themselves. That's fair enough, to cover themselves and avoid getting bad publiciy about it. If that's done store wide, I've no problem. Then fair enough.
