Woods' misfortune, McDowell's gain

Bit of luck for McDowell in many ways. He's fallen to 55 in the world so unless he can get back into the top 50 by end of year will miss out on the Masters. He was only due to play one more event in 2009, but this may help him big time.

Graeme McDowell will replace Tiger Woods at this week's Chevron World Challenge in California following the World Number One's withdrawal from the exclusive limited field event today.

McDowell's management team at Horizon Sports Management confirmed: 'We were in touch with the event organisers at the Tiger Woods Foundation yesterday while at Mission Hills in China, during Graeme's final round at the World Cup with Irish team-mate Rory McIlroy.

'They informed us that there was a possibility that Tiger may withdraw from this week's tournament, and asked if Graeme would be prepared to potentially accept a late invitation, should a spot in the exclusive 18-man field become available.'

McDowell has accepted the invitation to play in the 2009 Chevron World Challenge following Woods' announcement that he will now not be competing at Sherwood Country Club this week.

Biiiiiigtime. What a great piece of luck for GMac. I don't know the stats of the rankings, or the cash involved at Sherwood but I'd imagine any kind of mid table finish in the 18 would bump him up to 50?

are there world ranking points for this event? If so that's great news for him a decent finish will do his chances to get to Augusta no harm

He's more than taken his chance. A share of the lead going in to the final round with Harrington a shot further back.

38th. Ridiculous that the Chevron should be worth so much in terms of points given the way the field is made up.

its a bit extreme alright, what was the field? 18 invited players?
