Giving donations to charity instead of christmas presents

So we have decided amognst our immediate family members to this year give a donation to charity instead of buying gifts for each other. I thought in the current economic downturn it would be a novel way to help those who really need it. So I was just wondering how many of you out there thought about doing something…
