Entry Fee: Main race €15/£15; MTB/fun race €10/£10; Underage €2/£2

I'm a bit pushed for time tomorrow. Will I be OK to sign on a bit later, like 12:00?

Anyone else doing this? Blorg still swine-flu'd?

I'd say we'll keep sign-on open until 12:30 or so...

The kids (all 3 of them) thoroughly enjoyed it.they did a couple of laps of the technical bit. No bother to them.

Lumen how did you get on?

Quick race report, bit short of time...

Spend most of the morning doing completely inapproproate roadie faffing ("where the hell did I put my HRM? are my new leg warmers going to slip down?") and paid far too little attention to the important stuff ("I'm sure I have some of those knobbly type tyres in the back of the shed somewhere").

Managed to get mudguards, rack, and cages off for the race, shoved a bit of air in the knobblies. Joined the back of the "grid" with the other Freds, we were easy to spot, lacking club jerseys.

It was a nine lap race. Very professional organisation, including a digital lap counter over the start line.

First couple of laps were fine. Hung around the back of the field, managed not to crash. The course was nice, not very technical, but getting more slippery and rutted as the laps went on.

Then there's a bit of a grey period, where I'm not really sure what was going on.

Then after about 50 minutes (and a few more crashes) the suffering really started. I'm not sure if I bonked, or just lost the will to live. Is there a difference?

I was going slowly. There was much pain. My back was very bad, not helped by me attempting to ride threshold at 70rpm. I'm sure I could feel the muscle fibres in my thighs ripping apart from each other.

My bike was carrying what felt like it's own weight in mud.

My rear derailleur was making wierd noises and vibrations, like there was a badger trapped in it.

    Last lap now.

Someone in front lost a rear derailleur - it appeared to just snap off from all the crud stuck in it.

Ryan Sherlock passed me again (was that three times now?).

    Finally it was over.

I've no idea where I came. I'm not even sure I was placed at all, given all the lapping.

Thanks to the organisers. Gavin was marshalling and took some photos. They should be interesting.

Can't wait for the next race, whenever that turns out to be....

Lumen started off a bit dubious, he didn't know what to make of all this mud

    4163979958_3f6195ba4a.jpg

But he soon got to grips with it and was blasting along

    4163199019_232ae7859a.jpg

Towards that last 20 minutes, he entered the pain cave

    Great Photo Gavin!

@Lumen: Surely this is just your version of Raam's first report (which was just as grim), it's all up(hill) from here!

Well done Lumen. That last photo of you is one of the best cycling photos that I have seen this year.

Awesome, I beat four people, plus the DNFs/DSQs. Sweet.

I think I overhead Morgan complaining that he hadn't eaten enough.

It took a while to clean the bike today...

Jeez Lumen, one race and already you've gotten more decent action shots of yourself than most of us have from a year's racing:

Have you seen the epicmtb forum ? They do a lot of spins with younger kids, not sure if they are still at it or what. The SuperCross is finished, Nationals next maybe ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

yeah he/we started off with doing the epic spins may give them a look. It was the adrenalin rush of being in a race that got him.

There are more races to come:

    Sunday, December 20
All day Cyclocross Race - TC Racing (Cavan)

    Sunday, January 3, 2010
All day Cyclocross Race - Stamullan CC

    Sunday, January 10, 2010
All day All Ireland Cyclocross Championships
WhereSt. Annes Park and Gardens, Dublin

I'll have a video up soon - processing taking place at the moment.

I'll have my report up soon - simply, I passed Joe to be in 3rd with 600meters to go then my Force 2010 derailleur decided it liked spokes and exploded - had to carry the bike with Roger Aiken hunting me down. Slipped in 6 seconds ahead of Roger for 4th. Great racing though - a physically tough course with the muddy sections and the wind. Finished 2nd in the series - my first CX series.

The aul cyclocross looks like fun. Who's got one of those Specialized Singlespeed Tricross's in 54 cm em ?

Looks like a tough race to start on. Slippy conditions and I'm guessing minimal opportunity to draft and get dragged around.

I got one there a couple of weeks ago. I got it for commuting but would love to take it out on a cyclocross course. Would there be many singlespeed cyclocross bikes at those races?

I don't think there would be "many" but I saw at least one in the photos. I met a guy on a single speed Tricross at one of the training nights, was probably him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭sean_d

The only one I saw was in use as a spare, the rider having changed it after mangling his main bike about halfway through the race.
Don't really see the point in singlespeeds - 'cross is hard enough without adding unnecessary adversity...

Probably not. I think the guy at your training was Ant. There was someone at the race who started on a Tricross Single, although he was hovering near the back with me and I think it was his first race too.

I can see the attraction, if you have the leg strength, given the significant chance of rear derailleur failure (two that I know of on the last lap). TFFFYHTF and all that.

Both you and Ant would have coped fine on that course with a singlespeed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

Were there not two people on the singlespeed tricrosses ?

Apparently so. The one I started next to, and the one sean_d saw used as a spare.

The nationals in Saint Anne's is going to be a pretty amazing race again. Last year it was the final round of the Supercross Cup and produced some great racing. We took it out of the league this year and instead will just hold the nationals there.... Here is a video from last year...
