So i've decided that i'l invest in a laptop. The main use for it will be basic college stuff, nothing too technical but wouldn't mind being able to play some games on it aswell. (total war, cs:s). These two labtops seemed to have decent enough graphics cards with plenty of ram but i cant work out which will actually give me a better performance because i'm not really familiar with the CPU components. Can anybody be of any assistance here by pointing me in the right direction?

    Dell Studio 15
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED with TrueLife
    6144MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x4096 + 1x2048] (with 64bit OS only)

    E849

    or

    Dell Studio 15
    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Mobile Processor (1.6GHz, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Professional, 64bit, English
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED with TrueLife
    4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]

    E899

The graphics card for both laptops is a 512mb radeon 4570. Thanks in advance.

The latter one for 899 is the superior of the two, it's got the latest core i7 processor which should give better performance when gaming. I'm not too sure how the core i7 will affect the battery life, i'm sure Voodu will be around shortly with better advice!

If you want it for battery life, then go with the first. The i7s are pretty thirsty. If you can configure the first with 4GBs ram then that may work out better value. You won't notice much difference with 6GBs but your wallet will thank you for going with 4GBs.

    ^ What AlmightyCushion said.

From the sounds of it, the first laptop will do everything you need it for perfectly (should run Source games fine, etc). The second one looks a lot better spec-wise, I'd take 4gb 1333MHz DDR3 over 6144MB 800MHz DDR2 and combined with the i7 that's a pretty powerful machine. But as AlmightyCushion said, battery life on the first will probably be longer. With only 50€ difference between the two it's kind of a toss-up I guess.
