Timing chain snapped on Corsa

The timing chain has just snapped on my 2001 1L Opel Corsa. Just looking for some advise on how much it will be to repair. I've heard it might need a new engine altogether. I wouldn't get too much more than €1500 for it after repair so I have to take that into account as well (i.e should I just scrap it altogether).

    Any advise would be appreciated.

It depends on how much damage was caused to the engine Did your mechanic mention anything about the head gasket?
If so you're prolly best of to scrap it or trade in against another model in a dealer. They could take it and fix it up then at their own leasure.
What's the mileage on the corsa?

If no major damage then you may get it done for 400 max.
1500 sounds like a head gasket issue was found though

Mechanic said something about valves being f**cked over the phone, about 800 in all to fix. I have to call in to him on Wednesday.

I'm just wondering if it's worth my while getting it fixed and then selling it for about 1600 making 800.

Or try trade it for parts?

If you decide to sell it, try advertising it on adverts.ie. I'd be interested in it at a price, and probably others. If you decide to fix it, easiest route is a secondhand engine. With labour and all it would probably still end up around 800 euros. Whether this is worthwhile will depend on the overall condition of the car.

I'll get more info tomorrow or Wednesday off the Mechanic and I'll let you know then. Have to weight up the options.

If its a good car otherwise it would be worth it imo as it's cheaper than a replacement and as cars get older often it's better the devil you know and all that

    Hi,

Spoke with the mechanic, the car needs a new engine as the valves are bent. He said engine + timing chain + labour = €800.

Does that sound fair? To repair the engine it's about €1400.

    Does that sound about right?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Sounds ok to me. His rates must be reasonable.

Sounds very cheap. A bit too cheap.

Usually when your timing chain snaps, itl destroy the valves, head, pistons and conrods, could even make crap of the crank and bores.

Id want to know where he is getting this new engine from.

Just as a matter of interest ask is it a new engine for that price
of a good second(i'd guess myself), also you'd probably
be aswell getting a new clutch fitted since you'll have the engine out.
Don't be afraid to shop around.

mine cost i think it was 950 euro, same year and car as yours. but in the timing chain snapping, it busted cylinders/valves or something that had to be replaced and he had to skim??? or replace the head gasket... not well up on the parts but i know he had to do a few things. ran better than it ever did afterwards.

if you want a second opinion i can give you this guys name...opels are his baby.
