    any ideas/suggestions welcome

Krakow is amazing in December! And if you want to chance skiing Zakopane is 2 hours south. Poland is so undiscovered but really well worth the visit.

I'd suggest Berlin also, fantastic city. Others to consider are Lisbon and Prague. I have been to them all and they come highly recommended. If I had to pick one to go back to it'd be Prague. It's not a cheap as you'd expect but it sure is beautiful. If your going in Jan travel and accom costs should be reasonable, but make sure to bring warm clothes. Good Luck with your decision.

Berlin - buzzing, loads of history, great contrast between old architecture and new. Brandenburg Gate blew my mind when I stood beside it in real life. Way more impressive than Paris imo. Great restaurants and shopping. Three nights isn't enough!

Prague is an amazing city but I'd only spend 3-4 days max there. But if it's just a short break you want, I would definitely look into it. The sights are amazing!

Was in Vienna and salzburg two years ago. Have to be two of the most beautiful cities ive ever been in. As someone said above they are fairytale cities. Some places to visit in Vienna would be :

    Schonbrunn Palace
    310.jpg

Neuschwanstein Castle (Its the castle that disney based all its theme park castles off, fanatastic scenery all around and great view of the lands surrounding it. You can walk up to it or get a horse pulled carrage.

Theres loads more to see there but these are the two things i loved most about it.

Neuschwanstein is not really a trip you'd do from Vienna - more like Salzburg or Munich.

Honestly, I'd pick Munich over all the others any day of the week/year/millenium. After that, probably Vienna or Berlin.

I'd back up whoever said Prague. Get at least 4 days there to see the main sights. However, I always feel that any trip away becomes far, far better if you take in more than one location.

So don't ignore the rest of the Czech Republic. Karlovy Vary is where Geothe, Beethoven, Brahms and Bach are all said to have found inspiration because of its beauty, and the Sedlec Ossuary (bone church) in Kutna Hora is something a little different. Plzen is worth a visit if you're a beer fan. Going to these places also means you get away from the higher prices in Prague, which are now pretty much in alignment with western Europe.

Further afield, Prague is a relatively short train ride from a lot of other great European cities: Salzburg, Krakow, Berlin, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest are all a few hours away.

I thought Neuschwanstein Castle was in Bavaria?

Rome is amazing but really touristy and the whole city is a similar style of architecture and age. Definitely worth a visit but I prefer Berlin for variety. With Berlin you could be standing on history and not realise it (where Hitlers Bunker was is now a car park). The city is still being built in areas so its really interesting to be in a city which is relatively new but central to most European history. You get that sense wherever you go. I went to Germany this summer and I definitely came back feeling its completely underrated as a tourist destination.

Vienna is one of the few cities I've been to that I wasn't really pushed on, everyone's different though I guess. Rome is amazing but I'm not sure January would be the time to visit though as it's a lovely city to stroll around in the sunshine.

Going to Berlin next weekend for four nights so if you do go there should be able pass on some advice.

which flavour of ice-cream do you recommend :D

depends on what you want to see and what you want to do

modern history on every corner - berlin
ancient history on every corner - rome
    spectacular setting - innsbruck
    glorious architecture - budapest
amazing national parks just past city limits - zadar (croatia)
    under-rated - bergen (norway)

remember berlin will be very cold in january, eastern european cities like prague, krakow etc will be even colder so if you do choose one of these pack accordingly

Myself and the boyf have been to a few cities in Europe now and our next one is to Bruges. I have to admit I was inspired by the film! It looks so pretty and romantic! Good prices too, you fly into Brussels and then get a train.
